Back in September 2019, the Chronicle had claimed that Newcastle United were keeping tabs on Atlanta United star, Josef Martinez.
Although Atlanta United fell short of topping the Eastern Conference, Josef Martinez, 26, netted 31 goals across all competitions last season, of which 28 came in the Major League Soccer alone.
The Venezuelan is one of the best players in the Major League Soccer and after a highly productive campaign with Atlanta United, Newcastle United must attempt to sign Martinez this month.
The Magpies are currently struggling to get positive results on board, with injuries to key players hampering the momentum of Steve Bruce’s side.
They have won just once in their last five games and although they drew 1-1 with Wolves on Saturday, Bruce’s team have got a lot to improve if they are to achieve a top-half finish. Newcastle need a new striker who can score goals on a regular basis.
Bruce has seen Joelinton score just once since moving from Hoffenheim and with the Brazilian failing to live up to the standards so far, the Magpies must look to provide him with more support up front. Having said that, Josef Martinez would be a smart fit at St. James’ Park.
Martinez’s goal return is far better than the current Newcastle forward and he has the physical attributes to be a success in England. The 26-year-old has the strength to hold off defenders, whilst still possessing the intelligence and awareness required to get past them and in behind to create space for himself and his teammates.
After a slow start to life in England, Miguel Almiron has started showing signs of his potential. A move for Martinez would see him reunite with Almiron and it may just help the current Newcastle man hit top form again.
A lethal finisher, Martinez can also be a terrific option from the bench as he possesses the qualities to change a game. In the video below, one could get a glimpse of the Venezuelan international’s ruthless finishing in front of goal.
Martinez would undoubtedly bolster Newcastle’s attacking ranks, whilst adding depth to the squad. Adding a speedy, mobile and a prolific goalscorer like the Atlanta star could give the Magpies more cutting edge as well.
