Barcelona raiding the Serie A to sign this 4-goal winger would be quite risky – Here’s why

Why Jeremie Boga joining Barcelona would not be a wise move

According to Sport (h/t The Sun), Barcelona are in talks to sign former Chelsea academy prospect Jeremie Boga, who currently plies his trade with Sassuolo in Italy.

Coming through Chelsea’s youth ranks, Boga had loan spells with teams like Stade Rennais, Granada and Birmingham before permanently signing for Sassuolo in 2018. He featured for the Blues only on one occasion against Burnley back in 2017.

His move to Italy bought him good fortunes and this season, he has netted 4 goals in 13 games so far, including the ones against Italian heavyweights Juventus and Inter Milan. Boga’s impressive performance this season has caught the eyes of Barcelona, who are interested in him (Sport h/t The Sun).

The Catalonia outfit are currently atop the table in the La Liga. They have had a good season so far, despite starting on the back foot. They have also topped their group in the Champions League and have progressed to the next round.

Meanwhile, Ernesto Valverde needs reinforcements for their attacking ranks, despite having bought Antoine Griezmann in the summer. As a matter of fact, the club must find a backup and replacement for their star striker Luis Suarez.

Predominantly a left-winger, Boga has played as the target man on a few occasions. On paper, this might be an attractive offer for the Ivorian but should he move to Spain, it could be a stumbling block in his progression.

Barcelona have always been a formidable force and have some of the best players in their ranks. They have Ousmane Dembele and Griezmann to cover the left, whereas on the right, they have the ever-present Lionel Messi to lead their attack.

Homegrown talents Ansu Fati and Carles Perez have also shown up at the right time and most probably, they would be preferred ahead of Boga. It is clear that Boga might have to sit out for a long time.

At the moment, it would be good for the youngster to continue his development in the Serie A, where he is getting regular opportunities. The fact that a player of Griezmann’s stature had to be benched on some occasions speaks volumes of the kind of competition at Camp Nou.

In order to avoid the same fate as Thomas Lemar, who has been overlooked by the staff and board members at Atletico Madrid, it would be better for Boga to avoid temptation from the La Liga outfit.

Verdict

If Barcelona are to enter the market for a forward, they would do well if they sign an established player.

Therefore, Boga should be wise to continue his development with Sassuolo.
