Leeds would drastically boost chances of automatic promotion by signing this 29-year-old Spanish speedster

Why Ibai Gomez to Leeds makes complete sense

Back in October 2018, the Leeds Live had claimed Leeds United were one of the clubs interested in a January swoop for Ibai Gomez, who was then playing for Alaves. However, a deal didn’t go through and the attacker returned to Athletic Bilbao in January, signing a contract until June 2022.

Ibai Gomez, 29, has made 18 appearances in all competitions till date since returning to Athletic Bilbao in the second half of last season. He is yet to score for Los Leones this season in four appearances.

As far as Leeds United are concerned, they will be hoping to bounce back from their play-off disappointment last season at the earliest of opportunities and will be keen to keep themselves in the automatic promotion places for as long as possible as the season progresses.

The Whites currently sit second in the Championship, two points below West Brom following a 1-0 victory on Saturday against Birmingham City.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side haven’t been threatening at times going forward, while finishing has let the team down.

This season, after 12 games, Leeds have scored just 16 goals, although they have an identical points record and similar standing in the table after this amount of games as last season.

With the Yorkshire giants still struggling to kill off games in the way that they clearly want to, Bielsa will be desperate to strengthen in the winter window as Leeds look to gain a place in the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

While Bielsa’s side have been defensively decent so far this campaign, a lack of flair in the final third has hindered the Whites.

To put things into perspective, Leeds should target a forward in January as they need quality and depth in the second half of the season to sustain the momentum. And reviving interest in Ibai Gomez would make sense.

During his first spell at Bilbao, Gomez worked with Bielsa. The Spaniard is a dazzling winger, who can also play through the middle.

He is a quick, skilful and smart player, more than capable of splitting open opposition defences and scoring goals.

The former Alaves man is a goal threat from the wide areas and he could push Ezgjan Alioski, Jack Harrison, Helder Costa and Pablo Hernandez for starting spots.

Verdict

The West Yorkshire outfit are going strong in the Championship at the moment but they could do with reinforcements in the New Year in order to finish the season in the top two. In that regard, Gomez could be a smart acquisition for Bielsa’s Leeds.
