Hull City

Hull City would be totally right in offering their 18-year-old starlet a new deal and here’s why

Why Hull City are right to offer youngster Callum Jones a new deal

As confirmed via Hull City’s official website, Hull City have rewarded youngster Callum Jones with a brand new deal for his rapid development at the U-23 level.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has put pen to paper on fresh terms at the KCOm Stadium until the summer of 2021, with the Tigers having the option to extend his stay by a further twelve months.

Callum Jones, who joined Hull City from Bury FC this summer, just a week prior to the Shakers’ expulsion from the Football League, signed his first professional contract with the East Yorkshire outfit just three months back but the Tigers have moved quickly to secure his long-term future.

The Welsh starlet was a notable addition to Hull City’s U23 side this summer alongside other highly-rated emerging prospects Danny Lupano and Lucas Odunston, who came through the door from Birmingham City and Leeds United respectively.

Jones started his development in the youth ranks of Welsh clubs New Saints and Oswestry Town before joining Bury at the U-18 level on a free transfer back in October 2018.

The 18-year-old never made a first-team appearance for the Shakers in the Football League but he was a regular for the club’s U-18s, featuring in the FA Youth Cup.

The youngster’s move to East Yorkshire this summer has already started to pay rich dividends, with Jones making a positive impression for the Tigers at the U23 level in the Professional Development League and the new deal certainly comes as a vote of confidence in the player’s abilities.

Jones continues to be an unknown entity for the time being but early signs suggest that it shouldn’t be long before he starts to make a name for himself, with the teenage starlet enjoying a bright start to his career at the U23 level.

However, he is still very much in the formative years of his career and the Tigers need to be patient with his development, given that the process of transition from the youth ranks to senior men’s football is quite a lengthy one.

Given that he is already doing well in the Professional Development League, the 18-year-old is capable of catching the eye of some Football League club in the lower divisions to gain some senior professional exposure on a loan spell.

Jones is unlikely to be considered for a senior call-up before he gets some kind of loan experience under his belt, which is ideally the next big stride in his development curve.

Nevertheless, he looks like a real talent at this stage of his career and the Tigers could have a gem on their hands if the future if he goes on to fulfil his potential.

Highly-rated academy graduate Brandon Fleming has already gained a lot of importance under Grant McCann and Callum Jones could also find the pathway to the first-team open in the near future if he continues to put in the hard yards at the youth level.

Plus, with the Premier League clubs constantly on the lookout to snap up emerging talents from the Championship, a new deal for Jones is likely to go a long way towards helping the Tigers shield their prized asset from top-flight interest.

All in all, tying Callum Jones down to a new deal is definitely a step in the right direction for Hull City.
