6 goals in 9 games – Huddersfield Town’s lack of goals would be solved if this fiery 25-year-old leads the line

Why Huddersfield Town should plot a swoop for Jonson Clarke-Harris

According to Bristol Live, Huddersfield Town are weighing up a swoop for Bristol Rovers striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, with the report suggesting that new manager Danny Cowley is desperate to add a new striker to his ranks in January.

Huddersfield, though, aren’t alone in the race to sign the 25-year-old Leicester-born ace, with promotion-hopefuls Preston North End also keen on securing the services of the League One star, Bristol Live understands.

Jonson Clarke-Harris has been one of the standout performers in front of goal in the third-tier this term, with the 25-year-old already bagging 6 goals in 9 league outings and 7 overall in 11 appearances across all competitions for Bristol Rovers.

The centre-forward has been in the form of his life since joining Bristol Rovers from Coventry City back in January 2019 and was instrumental in the Gas’ bid for survival in League One the last term with a tally of 11 goals in 17 appearances in the second half of the previous campaign.

Clarke-Harris’ heroics at the Memorial Stadium last season saw him linked with summer moves to Wigan Athletic and Hull City, with the latter having a bid of £450,000 turned down by Bristol Rovers.

The 25-year-old has kicked on from where he signed off last season and his red-hot form in front of goal has continued to attract interest from club higher up the footballing pyramid, with Preston North End and Huddersfield Town mulling over potential moves in January.

The towering centre-forward has racked up some impressive numbers in League One, averaging a staggering 6.7 aerial duels per game, while he is also the most fouled player in the division, according to the stats. As a matter of fact, his tally of 18 goals in 2019 is the highest by any player in the top-four divisions of English football.

As per the report, Bristol Rovers are desperate to hold on to Jonson Clarke-Harris, who has two years remaining on his current deal, with the Gas making an arduous attempt to tempt him into staying put at the Memorial Stadium with a lucrative new deal in the pipeline.

To put things into perspective, Huddersfield Town are in dire need to bring in reinforcements after a disastrous start to their campaign in the Championship and it is not difficult to see as to why a new striker is on Cowley’s radar.

The Terriers, who currently sit rock-bottom of the standings, have only scored 7 goals thus far while conceding 17 in the process. Agreed, vulnerability at the back has been one of the major talking points but the forwards haven’t done an awful lot either.

Things have hardly taken a turnaround in the positive direction for the Terriers following the appointment of Danny Cowley at the helm of affairs, with the new manager suffering defeats in each of his first two league games against Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom

To that end, things could get worse for Huddersfield in the coming months and if the results do not improve soon enough, it won’t be long before the prospect of back-to-back relegations starts looming large.

Karlan Grant has been a rare shining light up top with 5 goals in 8 games but the likes of Adama Diakhaby, Fraizer Campbell, Steve Mounie, Elias Kachunga and Isaac Mbenza have all underwhelmed to varying degrees. And it’s really a matter of shame that some of these players are still on Premier League wages.

Besides sorting out their defensive problems, Huddersfield need to act quickly to bring in a new striker in January to support Grant and the arrival of an in-form attacker like Jonson Clarke-Harris could well spark a change of fortunes.

Strong in the air, adept at linking up with his teammates and blessed with the nous to get into the right positions to take his chances in front of goal, the 25-year-old has earned rave reviews for his good all-round game in League One and previous Championship experience in his CV means that he is not a complete rookie at this level.

All in all, desperate times call for desperate measures and Huddersfield Town completing a move for Clarke-Harris might as well prove to be the difference between survival in the Championship and back-to-back relegations.
