Huddersfield would be quite wise to avoid signing this 10-goal Conference Premier star – here’s why

Why Huddersfield Town should avoid a move for Kabongo Tshimanga

According to Football League World (h/t Examiner Live), Huddersfield Town are keeping close tabs on striker Kabongo Tshimanga, who currently plies his trade with Boreham Wood in the Conference Premier.

Along with the Terriers, Championship high-flyers Preston North End are also in the race to sign the 22-year-old, who has been in prolific form for Boreham Wood this term. (h/t Examiner Live

Having bagged 10 goals in 14 games so far, Tshimanga is currently making waves with his heroics in front of goal in the National League and his rich vein of form has prompted clubs higher up the footballing pyramid to pursue a keen interest in his development.

Born in Kinshasa, DR Congo, Kabongo Tshimanga migrated to England at a young age and completed his footballing education in the youth ranks of MK Dons, featuring on 13 occasions across all competitions at the senior level.

However, he struggled to make the grade at his boyhood club and spent time on loan at several non-league clubs, including Aldershot Town, Chelmsford City, Corby Town and Nuneaton Town, before completing a permanent switch to Boston United in the National League North in 2017.

Prolific returns of 24 goals in 42 games in the sixth-tier for Oxford City in the previous campaign paved the way for a move to Boreham Wood in the National League (fifth tier) this summer and Tshimanga has made an instant impact at Meadow Park.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield Town have made significant strides with an unbeaten run of seven games in the Championship under the stewardship of Danny Cowley following a woeful run of form in the first couple of months that damned the club to the relegation zone.

The West Yorkshire outfit looked all set for a horror season, and notwithstanding the fact that Cowley has managed to steady the ship with his charisma, he would probably still need to dip into the market for some reinforcements in January.

With top-scorer Karlan Grant attracting interest from Wolves and Bournemouth (h/t Sun), the Terriers could be forced to bring in an immediate replacement if the 22-year-old completes a switch to the top-flight midway through the campaign.

To put things into perspective, Huddersfield’s links with Kabongo Tshimanga doesn’t look all that impressive and the Terriers need to scour the market for better players if they are really serious about making progress under Cowley.

With all due respect to the 22-year-old’s qualities, his success in the National League hardly guarantees the same in the Championship and it would be fair to say that the youngster still needs a stepping stone before he is ready to make the jump to the second-tier.

The Terriers grabbed the headlines in the summer with a deal for highly-rated striker Josh Koroma, who came through the door at the John Smith’s Stadium from Leyton Orient with a massive reputation for scoring goals.

However, the 20-year-old has struggled to make the jump up to the Championship and while he has excelled for the Elite Development Team, the youngster has found it difficult to challenge for a place in the senior ranks.

Elias Kachunga, Grant, Adama Diakhaby, Isaac Mbenza, Steve Mounie and Fraizer Campbell haven’t done a lot this season but it is hard to see how they could possibly be usurped by non-league starlets in the pecking order.

Currently excelling in non-league football at the age of 22, Kabongo Tshimanga also looks like a player in the same mould as Koroma, although he is a couple of years senior to the former Leyton Orient star.

Verdict

Huddersfield have already got quality young talents like Mbenza and Diakhaby in their ranks and while it is true that they have both largely underwhelmed so far, there is hardly any evidence to prove that Tshimanga could possibly be an upgrade on them.

That said, the Terriers would be better off looking elsewhere if they are really interested to improve their squad in January.
