Why Huddersfield must go all out for this promising 22-year-old Ligue 1 sensation this summer

Why Huddersfield Town must sign Adama Diakhaby from Monaco

As per reports, Huddersfield Town are interested in signing Monaco striker Adama Diakhaby.

Diakhaby, 22, joined AS Monaco from Rennes in the summer of 2017 but failed to take his career to the next level. The Frenchman of Senegalese descent started just 10 of his 22 Ligue 1 appearances last season, scoring twice and setting up 3 more goals. Diakhaby found himself behind the likes of Lemar, Rony Lopes and Keita Balde in Leonardo Jardim’s pecking order.

However, Huddersfield are offering the forward a lifeline to resurrect his career as David Wagner’s side prepare for their second season in the Premier League after managing to beat the drop last year, finishing 16th on the table with 37 points.

The Terriers huffed and puffed before guaranteeing their Premier League status this past season and if they are to improve next campaign, Wagner would need quality additions to his squad. So far, Wagner has made some exciting signings in the summer transfer window but one area he should look to address is the team’s attack.

Goals were pretty hard to flow last season as the Huddersfield attackers struggled to consistently deliver the goods. Wagner’s men only managed 28 goals in the league, which is very less and rightfully saw them flirt with relegation. Keeping that in mind, a move for Diakhaby could be the step in the right direction.

Diakhaby struggled to find his feet at Monaco and often cut a forlorn figure since his move from Rennes a year ago. In all, he made just 22 Ligue 1 appearances which were way below what he had expected in his debut season at the Principality. However, in those appearances, Diakhaby did give glimpses of his talent and magic.

Pacey, agile and hard-working, Diakhaby is a winger but is capable of playing as a central striker or as a No.10. The French U21 international has shown pace on and off the ball, plus the ability to dribble beyond opponents, commit defenders and get on the end of crosses. He has shown enough to promise more, especially as he is still only 22.

Diakhaby would add some much-needed pace and power to Huddersfield going forward. He would challenge the likes of Tom Ince, Collin Quaner and new signing Ramadan Sobhi for a place in the starting XI. The 22-year-old Frenchman would certainly help the Terriers improve the effectiveness of their play in the final third.

After scoring just a couple of goals last season in Ligue 1, it remains to be seen what sort of impact Diakhaby will have on Huddersfield if he joins them ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
