Why Huddersfield have bagged a coup by signing this World Cup winner – an ambitious move

Huddersfield have bagged a coup by signing Erik Durm

David Wagner has successfully managed to retain Huddersfield Town’s position in the Premier League. The German is now faced with the task of taking the Terriers to new heights next season. The club have already made a few signings to bolster the squad ahead of their new campaign.

Huddersfield have completed their latest signing in Borussia Dortmund full-back Erik Durm for an undisclosed fee. David Wagner was at Dortmund during Durm’s arrival at the club. The full-back was initially playing in a striker’s role before Wagner helped him become a defender.

The Terriers were leaky at the back in the league last season, conceding a total of 54 goals across the campaign. Tightening the defence will be one of David Wagner’s top priority after Huddersfield also completed a permanent deal for Monaco defender Terrence Kongolo. The club have made the former Monaco man their record signing, making a statement in the league.

Erik Durm was a part of the Germany squad that clinched the World Cup in 2014. He was very much a regular in the national team. But over the last few years, injuries and health issues have severely blighted his career with the German outfit. Durm wasn’t fit enough to play a single game for Borussia Dortmund last season.

He is a smart, determined and committed defender. Durm is also a very versatile full-back. He is capable of playing on both sides of the defence. He is often praised for his work-rate off the ball. He’s also a mean defending machine and is not one to shy away from a challenge. The 26-year-old is impressively fast on the ball and loves to charge down the flanks before playing in crosses for the attackers.

Durm has made a total of 64 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund since joining the club in 2013. He was very much a regular in the side until injuries began to hamper his career. But Wagner has stated that the full-back has passed his medical with flying colours.

Durm possesses all the right qualities required to become one of the best full-backs in the league and could be a bargain come the end of the season.

Huddersfield have certainly completed a good deal for a classy defender who has tons of experience playing in the Champions League as well. He will be a vital member of the squad as Wagner’s men aim for a higher spot in the league this season.
