Man United signing this immense 23-year-old Tottenham star would be a statement

Why Harry Winks to Manchester United would be a top move

According to The Athletic (h/t The Express), Manchester United are weighing up a move for Tottenham star Harry Winks.

Winks, 23, came through the ranks of Tottenham’s youth system and made his debut in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the 2016/17 season at home. Since then, he has made 122 appearances for the Lilywhites.

He was a key component in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad until the manager was sacked. Winks played a major part in the middle of the park for Tottenham in their run to the Champions League final last year.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have endured a mixed season so far. They have played exceptionally well against the top teams in English football and have dropped points against teams that are struggling in the Premier League this term.

Despite spending heavily last summer, United have lacked the intensity in key areas and are at 5th place in the league.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has mostly fielded a young team for the majority of the campaign and despite showing potential, they have lacked the experience to carry the momentum.

One chief reason for the Red Devils’ struggles this season is their midfield. Fred, Paul Pogba and Andreas Pereira have failed to hit the heights expected of them, whereas, Scott McTominay has looked brilliant in each game. However, his progress has been cut short by injuries.

Frenchman Pogba had been out of the team for quite a long time and the youngsters in the squad were left to deal with the pressure. Nemanja Matic has fallen out of favour and he clearly seems to have reached the twilight of his career.

This clearly indicates United’s lack of depth in the midfield. Harry Winks would be a perfect solution to their crisis. The England international burst onto the scene during the 2016/17 season and has now established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the business.

Though he initially started as a playmaker, the Tottenham graduate has developed to be an all-rounder in the middle of the park.

His versatility is impressive as he has the ability to play as an attacking midfielder and also as a defensive midfielder. He never shies away from making a tackle and has received rave reviews for his transition into a modern-day footballer.

The 23-year-old’s work rate on the pitch is brilliant and he would certainly be an upgrade on Matic. Alongside Fred, McTominay and Pogba, there are chances of Winks being a key figure for the Old Trafford outfit if they manage to lure him to the Theatre of Dreams.

Verdict

Though it might be impossible for United to snatch Tottenham’s academy graduate, they should make a determined move for him by taking advantage of his situation under Jose Mourinho, who has given the youngster only two starts in the league.

If United succeed in doing so, they would have found the best solution and Winks can go on to represent them in the long run, given he has just started his career.
