Why hiring Claudio Ranieri is a good move by Fulham

According to BBC, Premier League’s bottom club Fulham have sacked manager Slavisa Jokanovic and replaced him with ex-Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri. The Italian performed a miracle when he won the Premier League with the Foxes in 2016, the most followed fairy-tale in the history of any sport.

After getting promoted at the end of last season via playoffs, the Cottagers have made the worst possible start to their Premier League campaign.

They are at the foot of the table with five points from 12 games. The alarming part is that the London club has conceded 31 goals at a rate of close to three per game, without a clean sheet to show for.

In contrast, the expectations were very high from a club that spent a fortune on numerous players over the summer transfer window. Securing the services of the likes of Andre Schurrle, Jean Michael Seri and Aleksandar Mitrovic is no mean feat, especially for a team that just got promoted to top-flight football.

Probably for the above-mentioned rationale, Jokanovic got the hook and now it is up to Ranieri to save the sinking ship. The veteran has the experience of the Premier League and he has shown in the past that miracles do happen in the football industry.

Ranieri will bring security

If we go through the history of Claudio Ranieri as a manager, especially in the Premier League, he relies on conceding lesser goals and then play on the counter with rapid attacking players to trouble the opposition defence. And for what we have witnessed so far from Fulham, they have not been able to shut up shop at the back.

To stay alive in such a tough league, teams should balance their games out – conceding and scoring of goals should be in equilibrium. Once the goal difference goes to -15 or -20, the trouble alarms are around the corner.

Hence, the 4-4-2 system of Ranieri could work wonders for the Cottagers. The Italian would drill the players to be a hard team to beat in every game before making them play expansive football. Furthermore, he would bring the stability that has been lacking from the first day of this season.
