Leeds signing this struggling 27-year-old star would get them a proper backup for Bamford

Why Fran Sol could be a smart addition to Leeds United’s ranks

Back in December 2018, the Scottish Sun had claimed that Leeds United were interested in signing Fran Sol, who was then plying his trade for Willem II. However, no deal materialised and the striker joined Ukrainian club Dynamo Kyiv in January 2019.

Fran Sol, 27, is yet to score for Dynamo Kyiv in the league this season. The Spaniard has played 12 games across all competitions, scoring no goal. Before joining Dynamo Kyiv, he scored goals at a splendid rate in Dutch football.

In fact, he netted 47 goals in 88 appearances across all competitions in his three-year spell with Willem II. Going by those figures, Leeds United must rekindle their interest in Sol and attempt to sign him this month.

The Whites held West Brom to a 1-1 draw on New Year’s Day, which helped both sides maintain their nine-point lead over the chasing pack heading into the crucial second half of the season. But Marcelo Bielsa’s side still have a long way to go in their pursuit of promotion.

The January transfer window is only six days old and Leeds have already suffered a blow, with loanee Eddie Nketiah heading back to Arsenal after a spell in West Yorkshire that saw him make only two Championship starts. Patrick Bamford is Bielsa’s first-choice striker and he’s done very well so far this term, netting 10 goals in 25 appearances.

While Bamford will be key to Leeds securing promotion, Bielsa must prioritise replacing the departed Nketiah this month. Signing a back-up striker for Bamford is crucial and Fran Sol would be a good fit at Elland Road.

Sol’s move to Ukraine hasn’t turned as per the scripts but he has proven himself as a prolific goalscorer during his spell with Willem II. The ex-Real Madrid trainee could be a high-quality option to play second fiddle to Bamford at Elland Road.

The Spanish forward will definitely get a chance to prove himself in the Leeds side and the fact that he has a proven goalscoring record means he is exactly the kind of player the Whites need as their back-up.

Verdict

Leeds have done well to remain on top of the league and Sol’s addition will add significant depth and quality to Bielsa’s side. He can provide support and competition for Bamford in the attack, and in theory, should be a fantastic signing for the Yorkshire giants.
