Why Everton Should Sign Cenk Tosun To Solve Their Goal-scoring Woes

Everton’s struggles appear to keep increasing as the days go by. Their poor slump ultimately led to the sacking of Ronald Koeman, due to which, they appointed David Unsworth as the caretaker manager. After a decent performance against Chelsea, Everton took a big step backwards, losing 2-0 to Leicester City, in what was a rather deserved one. It was a miserable performance, and it only highlighted the need for the Toffees to sign a quality striker in January.

Ever since Romelu Lukaku departed to Manchester United, Everton have been lacking sharpness in their attack and have failed to net goals. Wayne Rooney is the only Everton player to have scored in the Premier League this term, with the Toffees often looking toothless going forward. In fact, it almost seems like they have no natural goalscorer in their ranks at the moment, but Tosun could fill that void, as Everton are reportedly in the race to sign the £20m rated Turkish striker.

Born in Germany, he came through Eintracht Frankfurt’s academy before joining Gaziantepspor in 2011. Besiktas signed him three years ago and he has since inspired them to back-to-back league successes. The Turkish striker netted 27 goals last season, and he has picked up where he left off this time around. He already has 7 from 12 appearances this term, including 3 in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old usually plays as the spearhead in a 4-2-3-1 formation, is equally adept with both feet and is strong in the air. He is also extremely quick on his feet and these are all the qualities that Everton could certainly benefit from. Moreover, Tosun is a clinical finisher, who comes alive in the penalty area, and that could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Everton.

As things stand, making a move for Tosun could be a huge step towards solving their current problems. They are dangerously close to being relegated if they in the current trend and they need a miracle in the form of Tosun. Making a quick swoop for the striker in the January transfer window should be a priority for Everton.

Over the summer, he appeared to be close to a switch to Crystal Palace, with Newcastle United also interested in the Turkish striker. Both clubs are still believed to be interested, which makes it all the more necessary for Everton to make a move quickly. If Tosun keeps up his scoring form, there will be quite a few clubs outside the Premier League who’d be interested in signing him. Everton would do well to negotiate terms with the club and the player before other clubs begin making their moves.
