Forget Coleman – This 26-year-old right-back would be a perfect replacement for the ageing Everton star

Everton opinion: Should the Toffees sign Stefan Lainer?

Everton’s issues this season for the first time in a long time don’t stem from their summer spending. Because for the first time in years, the Toffees spent very smartly. They added the right players in the right areas but they failed to replace Romelu Lukaku once again.

The Belgian left for Manchester United last season, and the additions of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun have failed to do much. This has played a big part in their downfall this season.

The club have a team good enough to challenge for the top-seven place in the Premier League but they’ve failed to do that this season. Sure, a large part of that is because of injuries, and the fact that they’ve had to depend on Richarlison for their goals has hurt.

One area that they really need to reinforce is at right-back, with Seamus Coleman a shadow of his previous incredible self. The Irishman only returned from a horrific double leg break half way through last season, but that injury has taken a toll on the 30-year-old.

He now looks a shadow of his previous marauding self, with a lot of his speed and agility missing. That has proved to hurt Everton at times, with the modern game depending a lot on pace and the width that the full-backs provide.

Their second option is Jonjoe Kenny, and he isn’t suited to pair Lucas Digne as an attacking full-back. While Everton’s scouting system should have their own shortlists, one man they should look towards is Stefan Lainer.

He has been a consistent figure for RB Salzburg since joining the side in 2016 from SV Ried and his rise has been phenomenal. While Lainer was a peripheral figure when he first arrived, the 26-year-old soon took things into his own hands, improving at a stunning rate.

That saw the likes of West Ham (Express) and Napoli (Football Italia) chase him but no move materialised. However, given the state of Everton’s back-line, the Austrian would be the perfect partner for former Barcelona star Lucas Digne.

A very physical right-back, Lainer has a stunning blend of offensive and defensive skills. Not only is he solid and a tenacious defender but his overlapping runs are very lethal.

His pace and strength are put into great use when moving forward before delivering in a pin-point cross towards the centre-forward. RB Salzburg striker Munas Dabbur has been privy to that on more than one occasion this season, with Stefan Lainer creating three goals.

That’s exactly what makes him perfect for Everton, as the Toffees need someone with that kind of speed and strength.

Conclusion

At 30, Seamus Coleman is no longer in his prime and while the Irishman has been a great servant to the club, it’s time to move on. Lainer would be a perfect option for Everton in every aspect and Marco Silva must get him at all costs.
