Why Everton should go all out to sign Armando Izzo in January

Back in July, Italian daily Tuttosport (h/t Liverpool Echo) had claimed that Everton were interested in signing Torino defender Armando Izzo. However, a deal didn’t go through during the summer window.

Armando Izzo, 27, joined Torino from Genoa last summer and has quickly established himself as one of the integral members of their first-team squad. He racked up 37 appearances in Serie A last term and his consistent performances for Torino didn’t go unnoticed.

However, the defender stayed put at Torino and signed a new five-year deal. Izzo has hit the ground running in the new campaign, scoring three goals in 18 games across all competitions. With the Italian defender continuing to impress in the Serie A, Everton must rekindle their interest in him when the transfer window reopens.

Everton are currently struggling to get favourable results in the Premier League under Marco Silva. A lot of the Toffees’ problems have stemmed from their inability to secure clean sheets at the back over the past few months.

Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate have all struggled throughout this season, failing to keep things tight at the back. So far, Everton have conceded 20 goals in 13 games, which isn’t a good reading a club of their stature. It is vital for Silva to address his team’s defensive problems in January, so the Merseysiders must make a move for Izzo.

Izzo has featured in 18 matches for the Serie A team this term, scoring three goals across all competitions. As per WhoScored.com, he is averaging 1.5 tackles, 2.6 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game in the top-tier of Italy. He has been really solid for Torino and has all the attributes required to thrive in the Premier League.

Verdict

At the age of 27, Izzo is perhaps entering the prime stages of his career. The Italian stopper has done well in the Serie A over the last couple of years and would undoubtedly bolster Everton’s defensive ranks. In addition, the former Genoa man will also help Silva’s side put up a stiff challenge against the top teams in the Premier League.
