Everton signing this 25-year-old French star would sort out their midfield once and for all

Why Everton should plot a January swoop for Morgan Sanson

Back in July, French publication L’Equipe (h/t the Liverpool Echo) had claimed that Everton were interested in signing Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson.

Morgan Sanson, 25, has established himself as one of the most exciting midfield players in France. He has been a regular fixture at Marseille since joining from Montpellier in January 2017, managing five goals and three assists in 33 games last season.

The Ligue 1 club had made the midfielder available during the summer window following their failure to qualify for the Champions League, as per the report. However, Morgan Sanson stayed put at the club and is now a regular fixture in Andre Villas-Boas’ starting XI.

With Sanson performing well in the middle of the park, Everton must reignite their interest and look to sign him during the January transfer window.

The Toffees lost their best midfielder, Idrissa Gueye, in the summer and decided to replace him with Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

Unfortunately, Gbamin, who made only two appearances for Marco Silva’s side before damaging a quadriceps muscle in training, has been ruled out for a further three months after surgery. This has left Silva with limited midfield options.

After a promising 2018/19 season and a summer of heavy investment, Everton were tipped to break into the top-six and challenge for a European spot. But that hasn’t been the case, leaving Silva under huge pressure.

While signing a prolific goalscorer should be a priority, Everton must not ignore reinforcing their midfield options. They need more quality and depth in that department and signing Sanson would the right move.

With teams often pressing opponents a lot more in the Premier League with a lot of intensity, someone like Sanson would be fantastic to have in the team and he could also turn out to be the perfect partner for Andre Gomes.

If the Toffees are to push harder and finish in the top six, Sanson’s addition in January would make a huge difference.
