Go for it Silva – Everton signing this in-form 21-year-old star would solve their defensive woes

Why Everton should go all out to sign FC Basel’s Eray Comert in January

Back in February, Daily Mail had claimed that Everton were interested in signing FC Basel defender Eray Comert. In fact, the Merseyside club even considered a £7million move for the centre-back in January.

Eray Comert, 21, is a young defender in Switzerland and he impressed with his performances in the 2018/19 campaign. The Switzerland Under-21 international has hit the ground running in the new season as well, featuring in 21 games across all competitions so far.

With the defender currently performing well for FC Basel, Everton must revive their interest in Comert this January.

Everton have looked shaky at the back this season, with Michael Keane failing to reproduce his last season’s form.

Keane’s continuous poor displays saw him get dropped for the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Sunday. And while Mason Holgate did a good job alongside Yerry Mina at the back, the Toffees must fill the void left by Kurt Zouma in January.

Zouma enjoyed a solid season-long spell at Goodison Park from Chelsea, which prompted Marco Silva to attempt to sign him permanently in the summer. However, a move didn’t materialize.

Despite the fact that Phil Jagielka’s contract will expire soon, Silva didn’t sign a central defender during the summer.

And that’s why the Royal Blues should go all out for Eray Comert. He has been a regular for FC Basel since last season, impressing with his strong performances at the back. The 21-year-old is already a key player for the Swiss giants and has great potential.

Comert has captained Switzerland at Under-21 level and he would fit the type of addition that Everton have tried to make in recent times, as he is still very young.

As per WhoScored.com, the Swiss has averaged 2.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, 0.3 blocks and 81% pass success rate per game in the Europa League this season. All in all, the 21-year-old would be a smart addition to Everton’s backline.

Verdict

Comert has a long way to go in his career and he definitely can develop his game under the watchful eyes of Everton boss Marco Silva.
