Everton plotting a January swoop for this 5-goal Brazilian would improve their fortunes

Why Everton must plot a January swoop for Willian Jose

Everton players have headed into the international break after a 2-1 win over lowly Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday. Interestingly, only six points separate both the clubs but the Toffees must aim to build on the victory post the international break.

It has been surprising to see Marco Silva’s struggling in front of the goal, despite signing forwards like Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi. Kean, in particular, a £27m summer signing from Juventus, travelled with Everton to Southampton but was not part of the matchday squad.

In truth, he was dropped from the squad as a disciplinary measure after being late for a team meeting for the second time (h/t BBC). Kean is yet to score in the 11 games he has featured for Everton, which is worrisome.

Meanwhile, Cenk Tosun hasn’t set the world alight since arriving at the club from Besiktas in January 2018. He has played just three league games this season, scoring a goal. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done well in patches and is effective with a partner upfront.

To put things into perspective, the Toffees need a clinical goalscorer and someone like Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose would be a good fit at Goodison Park. Back in May 2018, Liverpool Echo claimed that Everton had come close to landing Willian Jose. In the end, however, a deal didn’t materialize.

The Brazilian, 27, moved to Real Sociedad from Real Zaragoza in 2016 and has impressed with his abilities in front of the goal. He helped Real Sociedad finish 9th in the La Liga table last season with 11 goals and five assists in 31 games.

In Willian, Everton would finally get a focal point in the attack which they have lacked throughout this season. The Brazilian forward has started the new season well, bagging five goals in 13 league games. In the video below, one can get a glimpse of the 27-year-old’s clinical nature in front of the goal.

Verdict

Everton must find a solution to their goalscoring woes in January. If Silva somehow manages to land Willian, it would represent a massive coup for the Toffees.
