Why Everton must beat Liverpool to the signature of this €100m South American World Cup hero

Why Everton should sign Yerry Mina ahead of bitter rivals Liverpool

According to reports, Everton are interested in signing Colombian star Yerry Mina from Barcelona this summer.

The giant centre-back was a stand-out performer for the South Americans during a World Cup campaign which ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat to England. Mina made an impact in Russia, scoring three goals in as many games, including the late equaliser which forced England into extra-time of their round of 16 clash.

But Mina has failed to impose himself at Barcelona since joining them in January from Palmeiras in a €11.8m deal and the Spanish champions are reportedly willing to let him go this summer.

Mina’s five-year contract has a buyout clause of €100m which Everton won’t trigger this summer for sure. In that case, a season-long loan deal for the Colombian defender would be ideal for Everton.

The Colombian failed to hit the ground running at Barcelona last season and was hardly even called into Ernesto Valverde’s matchday squads.

In the four league starts Mina made, Barcelona’s defence looked wobbly and disjointed, conceding 7 goals and scoring just 6. That doesn’t make a pleasant reading at all but Mina’s renaissance in Russia measn he shouldn’t be written off by any means.

Manager Marco Silva and Director of Football Marcel Brands are both looking to prepare the Toffees for a top-six challenge next season and going forward, adding a player like Mina will go a long way in making that dream come true. The ageing Everton defence could do with quality additions this summer and the Colombian would bring a lot to the table.

Everton shipped an eye-watering 58 goals in the league last term, with the likes of Michael Keane, Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka all struggling in central defence.

Keane, particularly, endured a tough time last season for Everton with some lackadaisical performances and needs to recapture the consistency he was showing at Burnley to become a permanent fixture under Silva.

However, with both Williams and Jagielka entering the twilight of their careers, the addition of a strong central defender like Mina would surely shore up Everton’s defence.

The 6ft 5in defender has proven to be a major threat from dead balls and if he joins Everton, he could turn Silva’s side into a dangerous one next term.

Mina is strong, physical, powerful, and would be a perfect partner for Keane in central defence. Also, the Colombian is comfortable playing out from the back, which is certain to tempt Silva.

After proving his quality during Colombia’s World Cup campaign, Mina has seen his stock rise and Everton landing such a talented defender especially ahead of bitter rivals Liverpool will be a great statement of intent this summer.
