Why Everton must beat Arsenal to sign this 11-goal speed demon on a free transfer

According to a report by the Daily Star, Arsenal are interested in a move for Gelson Martins. The pacy winger is the latest to have terminated his contract with Sporting CP and a report from Portuguese news outlet A Bola has also credited Everton with showing an interest in the 23-year-old.

While the situation at Sporting CP is truly unfortunate, one cannot deny that it has presented both Arsenal and Everton with a brilliant chance to land Martins for free. But where should the winger go?

Considering Arsenal already have the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in their ranks, it would be wise for Martins to join Everton instead. With new boss Marco Silva at the helm, the Toffees are in for a lot of changes. And a player like Martins could add immense value at Goodison Park.

After finishing in the 8th spot in the previous campaign, Everton must strive to secure a higher spot in the league standings. And to do so, Martins would certainly prove to be a brilliant choice.

In 47 appearances across all competitions for Sporting CP last season, Martins scored 11 goals and provided 3 assists. He averages 1.5 shots per game and is known to contribute with an average of 1.3 key passes and 2.6 dribbles per game.

The player is incredibly versatile as well, having played as an attacking midfielder and a striker last season. However, he thrives at right-wing, making him a great choice for Everton to inject some much-needed energy and pace to their final third.

Blessed with quick feet and an abundance of goalscoring skills, Martins would go a long way in helping Silva transform the overall style of play at Everton.

As seen during his stint with Watford, Silva was renowned for his dynamic, yet attack-oriented tactics, and it goes without saying that he will do something similar at Goodison Park. And considering Martins’ blinding pace and ability to bully opposition defenders, he could be a great choice to usher in a new era for Everton.

Thus, the Toffees must take advantage of the situation and do everything they can to sign Martins. Considering the fact that he is now available for free, a lot of clubs will be looking to acquire his services and Silva must move fast.

To send out a statement of intent and to set the tone for the type of football Everton want to play next term, the Merseysiders must actively pursue a deal for the talented Portuguese sensation.
