17 goals, 13 assists – Tottenham can forget about Christian Eriksen by signing this exciting 22-year-old ace

Why Donny van de Beek would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has come under heavy pressure this season after securing just two wins in the opening six games.

The Argentinean suffered further embarrassment against Colchester United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday when his side were beaten in the penalty shootout.

Amid all the exit talk, Pochettino has vowed to fight until the end to try and end Spurs’ trophy drought. It is incredibly hard to draw conclusions from just six league games.

With new players settling in and a few injury issues, plus the problems with certain players not being in the right place mentally, it can be easy for a rough patch to develop.

The Spurs manager clearly needs to make some changes in January if his team are to finish in the top four this season. Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen’s futures have still not been sorted, with their contracts running out at the end of the season.

Eriksen, especially, was linked with a move away from Tottenham but he ended up staying at Hotspur Way.

The Danish midfielder’s current deal at Spurs is due to run out at the end of the season and he will be free to negotiate a permanent move away from the club with any potential suitors in the New Year.

Spurs are determined to avoid losing a prized asset for nothing next summer, which opens the door for any club to submit an offer at the start of 2020.

Should Tottenham decides to sell Eriksen during the January transfer, they must replace him with Ajax star Donny van de Beek.

Donny van de Beek, 22, is rated as one of Europe’s exciting young talents who was a part of the Ajax side that stunned the world last season, blossoming both in the Champions League and the Eredivisie.

Last season was certainly an impressive one for the 22-year-old. He managed 17 goals and 13 assists – one of which came in the Champions League victory over Real Madrid in March.

The Dutchman, who was linked with Tottenham over the summer, has continued that impressive form in the current campaign, having racked up two goals and four assists in his seven outings so far. These performances should be enough for Spurs to reignite their interest in the midfielder.

Van de Beek loves the freedom to operate as a box-to-box midfielder and is capable of making some dangerous runs from midfield in the opposition half. The Netherlands international can do a little bit of everything for his team and has transformed himself into a consistent goal-getter from midfield which could benefit Spurs.

Off the ball, too, the 22-year-old has proved he is no slouch as he never shies away from putting in tackles to stop the opposition’s advances. A lively player, he provides all the ideal traits to succeed in England.

Verdict

The acquisition of a creative player of Van de Beek’s ilk will undoubtedly improve Pochettino’s attacking options at Tottenham. All in all, the Dutchman could be a potential long-term replacement for Eriksen.
