Watford would find an effective solution to ongoing defensive crisis by signing this £30m-rated La Liga star

Why Djene Dakonam to Watford would solve their defensive crisis

Back in July, the Daily Express had claimed Watford were one of the few Premier League clubs interested in Getafe defender Djene Dakonam. However, a deal didn’t go through and he stayed put at the Spanish club.

Djene Dakonam, 27, burst onto the scene with a fantastic 2018/19 season in the La Liga, helping Getafe qualify for the Europa League after spending much of the campaign in the top four. His impressive performances at the back did attract interest from clubs in France and Germany as well.

The Togo defender, who is valued at around £30m, has also enjoyed a good start to the new La Liga campaign and keeping that in mind, Watford should reignite their interest in the defender when the transfer window reopens in January.

Watford have been defensively all over the place so far this season, conceding 21 goals in nine games.

They are yet to win a game and unless manager Quique Sanchez Flores can pick up the pieces quickly now, Championship football awaits for the club. If the Spaniard can turn things around now, his priority should be to strengthen the defensive options in January.

Summer signing Craig Dawson has failed to provide the defensive stability, while the likes of Adrian Mariappa, Craig Cathcart, Christian Kabasele, Jose Holebas and Kiko Femenia have looked completely out of depth.

Defensive reinforcements are an absolute must if the club is to retain their top-flight status. That being said, the Hornets should plot a January swoop for Djene Dakonam.

A defensive rock, Dakonam flourishes as a centre-back using a combination of old-school defending and modern-day ball playing. He is also adept playing at right-back when required and such kind of versatility would give Flores options at the back.

Standing at 5ft 10in, the Togolese neither is the most physical of defenders nor a commanding presence that can constantly win aerial duels but he compensates it with his agility, speed and tackling traits.

He can also read the game very well and make crucial interceptions for his team. He has also made numerous last-ditch clearances and is not afraid to put his body on the line.

Verdict

The addition of Dakonam will undoubtedly bolster Flores’ defensive options at the Vicarage Road. He will be a significant upgrade over all the defenders Flores at his disposal.

At 27, the Togolese is currently playing some of the best football of his career so he can immediately hit the ground running Watford ends up acquiring his services in January.
