Why Derby County must go all out to sign Brentford’s 24-year-old playmaker in the summer

Why Derby County must go all out to sign Brentford midfielder Ryan Woods in the summer

Championship outfit Derby County were linked with a move for Brentford midfielder Ryan Woods over the recently concluded January window but the move did not go through.

However, they could revive their interest in him when the summer window commences and given the intelligence and maturity of the 24-year-old playmaker, a deal to sign him could truly benefit Derby County, who continue to be one of the top contenders for a promotion to the top-flight.

Even though Aston Villa are in second spot at present, Derby are just one point behind them and can close the gap in the days to come.

If the Rams do so, they will need greater reinforcements for the challenges to come ahead and to that end, a move for the talented midfielder could boost their forces in the middle of the park. Signing Woods in the summer could prove to be a real bargain buy for the club.

For a good majority of the season, Derby have been regarded as one of the toughest teams in the Championship and with good reason. They have a powerful front line comprising the strengths of Matej Vydra and David Nugent and their attack has often rescued them from sticky situations so far.

Lately, though, the Rams have struggled to play effectively against teams with deeper defences due to a significant lack of creativity and pace in the midfield area.

Usually, the likes of Tom Huddlestone, George Thorne, Joe Ledley and Bradley Johnson guard the defence from the midfield area and they have been quite solid at doing their job. However, when it comes to unleashing creative attacks down the middle, Derby have often struggled.

Hence, it is important for Gary Rowett to bring in an attack-oriented central player over the summer. When one considers Woods’ speed, agility and creativity, he does seem like the ideal fit for Derby in this regard.

The player has appeared more than 100 times for Brentford and is a key figure for the club. Prying him away from them could prove to be troublesome but when one considers what he can bring to the Rams’ team, there is no doubt that it will prove to be worth it.

His passing range and speed are what sets him apart from his contemporaries and at 24 years of age, Woods has a long way ahead of him and could work wonders for Rowett’s men. Hence, given a choice, Derby must do all they can to sign him in the summer.
