Man City signing this 21-year-old German would truly strengthen their midfield unit

Why Dennis Geiger to Manchester City would be a smart move

According to German outlet Sport1 (h/t Liverpool Echo), Manchester City are interested in Hoffenheim youngster Dennis Geiger.

The highly-rated German, 21, has been impressive for Hoffenheim this season. He came through the ranks of their youth academy and made his first-team debut under former manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Since then, Geiger has been an integral member of the team. He played a vital part in Hoffenheim’s qualification to the Champions League in the 2017/18 season where they finished 3rd in the Bundesliga.

His impressive performances have also caught the attention of Everton (h/t Liverpool Echo). With Dennis Geiger performing well for Hoffenheim, Manchester City must not hesitate to splash the cash to sign him.

City are known to have an array of options in the midfield but when it comes to a proper defensive midfielder, they could do with more depth. With Aymeric Laporte’s injury and Otamendi’s lack of consistency, Guardiola decided to deploy Fernandinho in the heart of the defence.

Rodri is the only player Pep can rely on as a defensive midfielder. If this continues to be the case, Manchester City would have to endure more problems when the season gets tougher. The Spaniard has already missed 5 games for City due to a muscle injury.

Without proper back-up, the Cityzens have lacked momentum in some of the games, losing 3 matches already. They did set the tone right with a recent win over Chelsea but it goes without saying that Geiger would be helpful for Pep.

In his 9 Bundesliga games this season, Geiger has provided 3 assists.

At 5ft 6in, he is a powerful presence in the midfield. According to whoscored, Geiger has registered 0.9 tackles, 0.2 interceptions, 0.4 clearances and 0.2 blocks per game in the Bundesliga. When it comes to passing, he has averaged an 85.8% success rate.

The German U21 international’s numbers provide ample proof of his qualities. Securing a spot in the starting line-up might be challenging but he would be a solid long-term prospect for Manchester City.

At 21, Geiger may not be a complete package but he has all the tools to succeed in the Premier League. Thus, City should waste no time in signing him.
