Southampton signing this £21m-rated teenage starlet would be quite a masterstroke

Why Dejan Kulusevski could be a fantastic signing for Southampton

According to Italian outlet Corriere della Sera Bergamo (h/t The Express), Southampton are one of the clubs interested in signing Parma starlet Dejan Kulusevski.

Dejan Kulusevski, 19, who is valued at around £21million, is on loan from Serie A side Atalanta.

He has been one of this season’s breakthrough stars in Italian football, with the playmaker bagging two goals and five assists in 12 appearances. The young Swede produced a fantastic performance during Sunday’s 2-0 home win over AS Roma.

Unfortunately for Parma, his future is in Atalanta’s hands. Nevertheless, Southampton must go all out to sign the teenage sensation in January.

Southampton have fallen below expectations this season, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men now in 19th place in the Premier League table.

Following their fourth-consecutive home defeat over the weekend—a 2-1 defeat to Everton—Hasenhuttl is under huge pressure. But the Austrian tactician has the backing of the Saints hierarchy as they feel he is the right man for the job (h/t The Sun).

The Sea Coast club will face Arsenal after the international break before games against Watford, Norwich, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa will give them a great opportunity to climb the table. Nevertheless, one cannot deny the fact that Southampton need more quality in the squad to avoid the dreaded drop.

With the worst defensive record in the league after 12 games, it’s a no-brainer for Hasenhuttl to prioritise bringing in a couple of defenders in January.

In addition, the Saints manager should also look to add more creativity and goals to his squad. In that regard, Dejan Kulusevski could be an exciting signing.

The 19-year-old’s exceptional performances on loan at Parma have earned him a first-ever call up for the Sweden national team ahead of November’s make-or-break Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Naturally a right-winger, Kulusevski can also either play up front or in the midfield and Southampton desperately need quality in the second half of the season.

Kulusevski will add flair to the Saints attack, whilst potentially forming a strong partnership with the likes of Nathan Redmond, Moussa Djenepo and Danny Ings.

Verdict

Kulusevski looks like a rising star who could make the step up to a bigger club. If Southampton manages to sign him in January from Atalanta, it would represent a significant piece of business.
