West Brom signing this veteran 32-year-old for free would go a long way in reinforcing their defence

Why Danny Simpson would be a smart addition to West Brom

According to a report from the Sun, Danny Simpson is training with West Brom in his bid to find a new club.

The 32-year-old was released by Leicester City at the end of last season and has been looking for a new club.

He has been unable to find himself a new home either in England or abroad. The right-back has been keeping fit with the Under-23s at the Hawthorns after Slaven Bilic gave him permission to link up with the club.

Though the transfer window has now closed, it does not stop anyone being able to register Danny Simpson to their squad. That being said, should the West Brom boss snap him up?

West Brom had a very productive summer that saw boss Slaven Bilic make many new additions. His side are fourth in the Championship, with 12 points from six games, and entered the international break with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

It took some time for the Baggies to sign players during the summer transfer window but eventually, they ended up bringing in 10 new players before the window slammed shut.

Bilic signed a new right-back in Darnell Furlong and has witnessed academy product, Nathan Ferguson, make the position his own this season.

Furlong has had a slow start to life at the Hawthorns, however, having forced his way into contention recently, he will be keen to push on and aim to nail down a place in his new side as quickly as possible.

Competition in the squad is always important, and with games expected to come thick and fast after the international break, Bilic will have the task of keeping all of his players fresh for the entire stretch.

January is always a crucial month for teams who want to win promotion but it is notoriously difficult when it comes to signing players. Prices are even more inflated than normal and clubs are reluctant to sell as they don’t want to disrupt their squad for the run-in.

To beef up his squad without spending as a transfer fee, hence, signing Danny Simpson would make sense for West Brom.

Simpson proved to be a valuable member of Leicester’s squad, with the defender helping the club avoid relegation in 2014/15, as well as helping them win the fairytale title a season later.

He has been on the wane in the last couple of years but at 32, Simpson still has a bit to offer. The right-back has volumes of Premier League experience, so that could come handy for the Baggies.

Verdict

On a free transfer, signing up Simpson would be a smart move as Bilic looks to ensure he has a squad capable of mounting a promotion challenge this season.
