Wolves signing this Serie A outcast could be one of the shrewdest moves by Nuno Santo and here’s why

Why Daniele Rugani would be a solid signing for Wolves

Back in August, a report from the Times claimed that Wolves had tabled a £30million offer for Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani, who had also attracted interest from Arsenal.

Daniele Rugani, 25, was told he can find a new club after Juventus signed Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax earlier this summer. It has been a constant struggle for the 25-year-old at Juventus. Despite making his breakthrough at the club in the 2015/16 campaign, he has gone on to make just 87 appearances in five seasons.

However, given his previous ties with manager Maurizio Sarri at Empoli coupled with the long-term injury blow suffered by Giorgio Chiellini, Rugani would have hoped to have more opportunities this season.

Shockingly, he is yet to play this season for the Turin giants and given the Italian defender’s situation at the club, Wolves must reignite their interest in him.

Wolves are a quality side but they need more strength in depth after making it to the Europa League group stages. One of the primary reasons for the Wanderers’ rich success this past season was their well-drilled defence. However, we have seen some cracks appear in their defence this time around.

None of Conor Coady, Willy Boly or Ryan Bennett has looked at their imperious best so far this season, while on-loan Real Madrid defender Jesus Vallejo has struggled to cope with the physical demands of English football.

Despite adding Vallejo, Nuno Espirito Santo should still bring in another defender to strengthen his defensive options. To put things straight, the Wolves manager must splash the cash to sign Daniele Rugani in January.

Rugani would be an exciting addition for the Midlands giants, as he’s someone with great pedigree and experience. The Italian is a ball-playing centre-back who would potentially be an upgrade in the Wolves defence.

His heading ability is massively underrated, as he can be a threat in the final third as well. His strength and fearlessness enable him to go into any challenge and come out unfazed.

Although he could take time to adjust to the Premier League, Rugani would undoubtedly be a long-term upgrade on Bennett. The 25-year-old has the quality to come in and singlehandedly stabilise the defensive situation at the Molineux. Alongside Coady and Boly, the Lucca-born defender could really prosper.

Verdict

Rugani played just 20 senior games across all competitions last season for Juventus and needs regular minutes to reach his full potential. A move to Wolves would be ideal as the Italian has the required qualities to thrive in the Premier League.
