Why Daniel Levy Moving In To Sign This Barcelona Midfielder Could Workout Well For Pochettino And Tottenham

Andre Gomes

Why Signing Andre Gomes Would Work Out Well For Tottenham

Andre Gomes has not experienced the best of times with his current club Barcelona. He did come very close to sealing a summer move to join Tottenham Hotspur but the deal fell through. With the winter window coming up, Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be interested in pursuing the midfielder once more.

The Portuguese has failed to make an impact at Barcelona and is understood to be on a quest to find regular playing time. Spurs could be in pole position for Gomes who joined Barcelona in a big-money move from Valencia in the summer of 2016.

It might be considered unfair to judge Gomes based solely upon his disappointing displays at Barcelona. While the midfielder has struggled to influence games at the Camp Nou and has failed to emerge as a possible replacement for Andres Iniesta, the fact still remains that he was one of La Liga’s most exciting players at Valencia.

A naturally powerful and dynamic athlete, Gomes looked a lot like Yaya Toure at his peak when he was at Valencia. At Barca, however, technique and subtlety are prioritised over energy and power, which has made the 24-year-old look like a misfit.

In that sense, Tottenham appear far more suited to bring the best out of Gomes, especially with Pochettino intent on putting together a high-octane attacking side. The midfielder would be a natural fit while also providing a devastating counter attacking threat.

Furthermore, with Gomes featuring very little in Barca’s La Liga games under Ernesto Valverde, it is quite evident that the player is in need of more action on the field. The Euro 2016 winning talent will be keen to make it to the Portugal squad for next summer’s World Cup, for which he needs regular game. Staying back at Barcelona will certainly not help him.

Having said that, Gomes will have to mount a tough fight for a starting spot even at Tottenham. With players like Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen possessing brilliant skill and vision, the Barcelona man would have to become a lot sharper. He would also have to compete with Heung-Ming Son’s blistering pace. As far as the deep midfield position goes, Pochettino has his hands full with the likes of Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Harry Winks.

However, the future at Spurs will not be as bleak as it is for him at Barcelona, since the English club’s style suits him a lot more. He would have to work a bit harder but the benefits will certainly pay off in dividends.
