Crystal Palace’s best interests lay in signing this 26-year-old ace in January to shore up defensive forces

Why Crystal Palace should make a move for Wilfried Kanon in January

Back in October 2018, a report from the Sun had claimed that Crystal Palace were interested in ADO Den Haag defender Wilfried Kanon. However, a move didn’t materialise and he has since stayed put at the Eredivisie club.

Wilfried Kanon, 26, joined ADO Den Haag back in 2013 from Romania outfit Corona Brasov and after a slow start to life in the Netherlands, he has slowly become one of their key players. He enjoyed a good 2018/19 campaign in the Eredivisie that earned him a place in the Ivory Coast squad for the Africa Cup of nations.

The 26-year-old is a solid defender and he is at an ideal stage of his career to take the next big step. Crystal Palace could be the ideal place for Kanon’s development as Roy Hodgson aims to have a solid 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

Crystal Palace have shown defensive frailties in the new season that should be a big concern for Roy Hodgson. Gary Cahill was snapped up on a free transfer from Chelsea to solve the club’s defensive woes but Hodgson’s side need much more than the former England international, who will turn 34 in December.

Also, Scott Dann is no spring chicken at 32, so Hodgson needs to plan for the future.

That being said, Palace should make a move for Wilfried Kanon in the summer and his addition would potentially solve their defensive woes for the next five years, at least.

Kanon has earned rave reviews for his performances in the Eredivisie, catching the attention from a host of clubs in England, Spain and Germany. A tall, strong and powerful defender, the Ivorian has enjoyed six solid seasons in the Eredivisie with Den Haag.

He is a hardworking and reliable player who is solid in the air as well, making him an asset during set-piece situations.

The 26-year-old can also play as a holding midfielder due to his composure on the ball and understanding of the game. His favoured position is in central defence though, where he likes to be physically dominant against centre-forwards and read the game well from the defensive point of view.

Palace could really do with a player like him in their squad as Kanon will add quality as well as depth to their defensive ranks.

Verdict

All in all, we can conclude by saying that Crystal Palace should do everything in their might to sign Kanon during the January transfer window.
