Crystal Palace reviving interest in signing this 30-year-old international would repair their midfield quite well

Why Crystal Palace should make a move for Daniel Wass in January

Back in April 2018, a report from the Sun had claimed that Crystal Palace were one of the clubs interested in then Celta Vigo midfielder Daniel Wass, who left Balaidos to join Valencia last year.

The Denmark international, 30, had a decent debut campaign with Valencia as he contributed with a goal and four assists, helping the Mestalla-based club to Champions League qualification. He has been a consistent performer in the La Liga for some years now, and at 30 is operating at his prime.

As far as Crystal Palace are concerned, they do have a plethora of options in central midfield.

In Luka Milivojevic, Cheikhou Kouyate, Max Meyer, James McArthur, James McCarthy and Jeffrey Schlupp, Roy Hodgson has depth in the midfield department but he lacks a creative player who could make a difference in the final third.

Victor Camarasa, on loan from Real Betis, is only a creative force in the Eagles team but Hodgson’s side needs more quality if they are to break into the top-10 this season. That’s where the signing of Daniel Wass would make sense and Palace must reignite their interest in the midfielder in January.

Wass is well regarded in Spain and a move to the Premier League could be attractive after four years in Spain. While he prefers to play on the right flank, the 30-year-old is capable of operating as a right-back and also as one of the advanced central midfielders in a 4-3-3 formation.

Due to his ability to play as a right-back, he could be a tempting prospect for Hodgson, who failed to sign a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer.

Wan-Bissaka’s departure to Manchester United has created a huge void in the squad, leaving Hodgson with Martin Kelly and Joel Ward as options. So, Wass could be a top option to consider as he’ll not only bring competition but also add depth.

The Denmark international is a player who could make a massive impact at Selhurst Park, essentially because of the way they play. His quality on the ball in the midfield can quantify the runs made by the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend.

His productivity for Valencia last season might not look all that impressive but the 30-year-old can be a real asset to Palace with his passing and ability to provide width to the attack further up the pitch.

Verdict

With that in mind, Palace should go all out in their pursuit of Daniel Wass in the New Year.
