Is Marco Verratti the right choice for Manchester United’s midfield?
Manchester United have been eyeing Paris Saint-Germain star Marco Verratti for the longest time now and if latest reports are to be believed, the club could make a renewed attempt to sign him once the upcoming transfer window commences. After notching up well-deserved wins against rivals Chelsea and Liverpool in recent times, United appear to have solidified their position as Premier League runners-up this season.
However, to make a solid title push next season, a player like Verratti could vastly improve United’s chances on the whole.
The player is understood to be unhappy at PSG and is pushing for an exit this summer. Despite splashing loads of cash last summer, the French giants were dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid and it does not reflect well on them.
Estimated to be valued at £60m, a move for the sensational midfielder does seem like a good option for the Red Devils at this point. Jose Mourinho has managed to assemble a squad of prolific players, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic all at hand. However, something has been missing in the centre of the park and Verratti could prove to be the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle.
Straight off the bat, there is absolutely no doubt that United will need quality midfielders once this season comes to an end. With club veteran Michael Carrick set to retire and uncertainty surrounding Marouane Fellaini’s future, there will be a serious shortage of depth and power in the middle of the park for United. A player as accomplished and talented as Verratti can work wonders in filling the void.
Also, Verratti could really boost United’s attack and power in the final third. With a player like Sanchez in the mix, the PSG star could help provide a creative outlet from the midfield area. Moreover, both players are proven match-winners with ample Champions League experience as well and if they work together, they can easily transform United into champions. Furthermore, with Romelu Lukaku leading the line, Verratti’s inclusion does seem like a tantalising prospect.
With players like Lukaku, Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Matic, Juan Mata and Verratti playing together for United, Mourinho might finally achieve his dream of lifting the Premier League trophy next season. Hence, this is a move United must definitely go for since Verratti can remarkably boost the club’s overall performances by a significant margin.
