Wolves signing this 25-year-old African star would make them a solid unit at the back – Nuno Santo must get him

Why Christian Luyindama would be a fantastic signing for Wolves

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Wolves are interested in signing Galatasaray defender Christian Luyindama.

The DR Congo international, 25, joined Galatasaray on loan from Standard Liege in January before making his move permanent, having impressed in Turkey.

A powerful 6ft 3in centre back, Christian Luyindama is impressing for the Turkish giants, and the report adds that Wolves had sent scouts to watch him in recent Champions League games against PSG and Club Brugge.

The 25-year-old, who is under contract at Galatasaray until 2022, has made nine appearances in all competitions since his August move. That being said, Wolves must plot a January swoop for Luyindama to bolster their defensive ranks.

Wolves stunned Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium prior to the international break, with Adama Traore scoring both the goals for the Midlands outfit.

It was a performance which showed that their confidence is back after a really sluggish start to the new Premier League season. The Wanderers were one of the biggest surprise packages last campaign and Nuno will be mightily pleased with how things have panned out of late.

Nevertheless, if Wolves are to break into the top-six as well as perform well in the Europa League, they’ll need more quality and depth in their squad.

One area Nuno must look to improve is his defence, which was one of the cornerstones of Wolves’ success last season. Jesus Vallejo was brought in on loan from Real Madrid earlier in the summer but the jury is still out, with the Spanish defender yet to fully adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

The likes of Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Ryan Bennett have underperformed, leaving the Wanderers far too flimsy at the back so far this season.

With that in mind, it would be an excellent idea for Nuno Santo to bolster his backline with some fresh legs in January and someone like Christian Luyindama ticks all the boxes.

Standing at 6ft 3in inches with a towering frame, Luyindama is a defensive beast who is capable of keeping the opposition at bay with his sheer strength, power, anticipation and reading of the game.

The Congolese is a robust tackler and never hesitates to go toe-to-toe with physically dominant forwards. Due to his height and physicality, he often comes out on top while competing with his opponents in the air.

The 25-year-old isn’t the quickest along the ground but he makes up for his lack of pace with his positional awareness and composure on the ball. Luyindama can bring the ball out from the back without much fuss and has a robust playing style that seems ideal to the intense nature of the Premier League.

Verdict

The DR Congo international has real quality and Wolves shouldn’t think twice about making a move for him in the New Year. And if Nuno does bring Luyindama to the Molineux, he might just turn out to be a really smart long-term investment for the Black County outfit.
