Why Chelsea should send Billy Gilmour out on loan

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour recently revealed that new boss Frank Lampard rejected his request to go out on loan for more playing time. The 18-year old claimed that Lampard wants him to stay at Stamford Bridge this season (h/t Daily Mail).

However, the midfielder has made just two appearances for the Blues’ senior team. He was a part of just one game in the Premier League while another one came in the League Cup this season. Gilmour came off the bench to play for six minutes in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United.

Even though Lampard is known for providing opportunities to youngsters, letting Gilmour leave on a season-long loan deal would have been a better option for the boss, considering the midfield options available in the squad.

Lampard has N’Golo Kanté, whenever fit, in the starting line-up alongside Jorginho in defensive midfield. Mason Mount is slowly establishing himself as a permanent in the starting XI this season.

Meanwhile, Kante has struggled with injuries this term but he has scored two goals in his four league appearances which also include three full 90 minutes.

Jorginho, on the other hand, has played some really long and creative passes and has stepped up in a new role under Lampard, contrary to former boss Maurizio Sarri, who mostly kept him limited to a very specific role.

In fact, Jorginho has found the back of the net once while he has also provided two assists.

Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley are the other two midfielders, who are also attempting to force their way into the starting line-up.

Kovacic, who signed a permanent deal with the Blues at the beginning of the season, has featured in almost all the league games so far. Barkley, on the other hand, has also made his presence felt.

With so many options available, it is difficult for Gilmour to find some playing time. Thus, Lampard should revisit his initial decision and allow the youngster to leave on loan.
