A much-needed marquee signing? – Here’s why Chelsea must pay €100m and sign this World Cup-winning hitman

Why Chelsea should land Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona in January

Antoine Griezmann’s move to Barcelona was one of the biggest in the summer window.

The Frenchman had starred for Atletico Madrid and helped France win the World Cup in 2018, but he hasn’t set the Nou Camp alight.

Barca are having their own problems with Lionel Messi getting injured again, and Don Balon (h/t Calciomercato) claims that Chelsea are eyeing a bid for Griezmann.

The Blues have been handed a transfer ban but are willing to offer €100million for the 28-year-old in the winter window, should they be able to sign players (h/t Calciomercato).

Barcelona paid Atletico €120million (h/t Calciomercato) for Griezmann in the summer, but Chelsea should do all they can to land the Frenchman.

The perfect mix of experience and quality

Frank Lampard has impressed after taking over as the Chelsea manager by handing young players an opportunity.

Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori have been three bright spots for the Blues, and there have been some great results too.

Chelsea might have lost to Liverpool at the weekend but they deserved a point from that clash.

The Blues are missing some quality and experience in the attack after the departure of Eden Hazard.

Christian Pulisic needs more time to learn the English game while Willian and Pedro are capable of playing well in bits and pieces.

Griezmann isn’t young by any means but at 28, he is in the prime of his career and can play in several positions.

The Frenchman is adept at starring behind the striker, can play on either wing and can lead the attack too.

Chelsea can build their attack around the Barcelona star, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the campaign goes for the Catalans.

They seem to be at a loss without Messi, even if Griezmann is one of the best in Spain.

The Frenchman is one of the most hard-working players in the Spanish league too, and that will bode well in this newlook Chelsea team.

Verdict

Chelsea couldn’t spend big in the summer but they need to invest if the transfer ban is lifted in January.

Griezmann might have only signed for Barcelona in the summer, but the Blues should do all they can to land the Frenchman.
