Why Chelsea cannot afford to let go of their £120,000-a-week world-class superstar this summer

Thibaut Courtois has been linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge over the past two months. The Belgian shot-stopper is reportedly a top target for Real Madrid this summer while Chelsea are eyeing a deal for Jack Butland to act as his replacement. But just how much sense will this transfer make?

The Chelsea no.1 has been in the side for a long time, winning the Premier League title on two occasions as well as the Golden Glove in the 16/17 season. He has a vast amount of experience when it comes to playing at the highest level, having previously represented Atletico Madrid as well.

A commanding presence between the sticks and an excellent shot-stopper, the £120,000-a-week Courtois came to Chelsea’s rescue numerous times this season, especially during the 1-0 win against Liverpool.

He maintained 15 clean sheets over the course of the recently concluded season and in comparison, Butland managed to record a meagre 6 clean sheets.

However, it must be noted that the Stoke goalkeeper trumps Courtois when it comes to making saves, with 144 to 76 respectively. But that could also be due to Stoke’s weak defence which often allows opposition players to hit shots on target.

It will be a huge loss for Chelsea to sell Courtois since he is just 26 years of age and still has his best years ahead of him.

But when a club like Real Madrid comes calling, it’s hard to decline. Madrid also offer the added benefit of playing in the Champions League next season, while Chelsea only have Europa League football to offer.

Given the circumstances, Chelsea must push for the Belgian to sign a new deal despite interest from Los Blancos. His contract expires only next year but considering how crucial Courtois is for the club, it is surprising that there has been no talk of a new contract on the horizon.

One thing is certain – the potential transfer of Courtois will surely spark a transfer merry-go-round among keepers in Europe as almost all the big clubs are in dire need of a quality goalkeeper.

It will be difficult for Chelsea to replace a top-class shot-stopper like Courtois, which is why they have to hold on to the Belgian custodian at all costs.
