Why Celtic signing this 29-year-old physical defender could turn them into title contenders again

Why Celtic must make a January move for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Earlier in the summer, Montpellier submitted a loan offer with an option to buy for Lyon centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, as per French Football News. However, a deal never materialised and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa ended up staying at Lyon.

Opportunities in the Lyon first-team have been very few for the Frenchman as he played just three times across all competitions last season. Yanga-Mbiwa has not played this season at all for Lyon and it is safe to suggest he doesn’t have a future under manager Bruno Genesio.

Therefore, Yanga-Mbiwa must seek a move away from Lyon in January in order to start playing again regularly. Well, considering the 29-year-old’s current situation at Les Gones, Scottish champions Celtic must make a loan move for him once the transfer window reopens.

Celtic have had a dodgy start to the season with the club going through constant distractions regarding one thing or another. First, it was Dedryck Boyata who downed his tools for an important game, and then Moussa Dembele forced his way out of Parkhead to join Lyon.

Such interruptions have hampered the Hoops’ campaign so far but there is still plenty of time for Brendan Rodgers to turn things around.

Rodgers was not backed enough in the summer transfer window and it’s clear he needs a couple of signings in January to freshen up the squad. One area that definitely needs reinforcements is the defence, which has flopped this season.

Injuries and poor form of Celtic’s defenders has been a big problem with Rodgers still clueless over his strongest centre-back pairing.

Boyata has been Celtic’s best defender by a country mile but the Belgian is out of contract at the end of 2018/19 season. There have been no talks of a new deal for the defender, meaning there are chances that Boyata might walk out of Parkhead next summer.

It remains to be seen if Boyata is given a new deal or is sold in January but Rodgers must bring in a central defender. Yanga-Mbiwa would fit the bill perfectly at Celtic.

Dedryck Boyata

He has massive experience of playing in Europe and would surely shore up the Hoops defence that has failed to inspire in the Scottish Premiership this term.

Yanga-Mbiwa is a physical defender with the attributes to deal with the challenges of the Scottish Premiership. The Frenchman playing alongside Boyata could form a fearsome partnership and would address the concerns in this Celtic side, transforming Rodgers’ men into title challengers once again.
