Why Celtic Should Sign Iceland’s Very Own Thor – A Quality Midfielder From FC Basel

It was only a matter of time before some of the Iceland players were linked with a big money move to a top team in Europe. After some stunning performances, Thor of the Icelandic football team or Birkir Bjarnason, as he is more commonly known as, is linked with several clubs and here is why we think the Scottish giants Celtic should look to sign the midfielder.

Brendan Rodgers has taken over recently and is looking to increase some of his options at the club and the 28-year-old attacking midfielder could just be the ticket that the club needs as it looks to strengthen the side and look forward to European qualification in the coming days.

Celtic are heavy with midfielders at the moment but since Rodgers could be looking to apply a 4-3-3 formation which won him a lot of plaudits and brought a lot of attacking football to Liverpool, it would make sense to have a few players who can fit into different formations, tactics and roles for the club.

There is a belief that Rodgers might not be able to keep hold of Tom Rogic and having signed Mousa Dembele from Fulham, the side do need someone who can play out wide and also run back and cover the midfield when need be.

Bjarnason might be seen as a midfielder but he is more of an attacking player and can start games right at the tip of the attack just behind the main striker. The one region where he could actually be played is out wide on the left side of the team.

The Icelandic star is known as Thor for his incredible hair and also good looks with news coming in that he has been offered a modelling contract after his performances in Euro 2016 but Celtic fans would be hoping that he can continue this kind of form for the side if he does sign.

Currently Bjarnason plays for Swiss club Basel and he did score 15 goals for the side last season, which is a pretty decent return considering that he played all around the park. His versatility is a great feature for any team that looks to sign him but he will certainly add a lot of quality to the Scottish side.

Bjarnason is somewhat of a passer and is known for his short range accuracy, though his finishing and tackling isn’t the greatest, he can surely add some quick movement to the Celtic side, something that certainly Liverpool front three were known for.

The Icelandic star might not be the biggest name that Celtic would be looking to sign this season but he could be one of the best buys in terms of work rate and value and that in itself could lead them to the Champions League next season, by the power of Thor!
