Celtic re-igniting their interest in this 22-year-old talent would solve a key issue in the summer – opinion

Celtic FC opinion – Hoops must re-ignite interest in Fernando Fonseca

According to a report in Scottish Sun, Celtic wanted to sign Porto right-back Fernando Fonseca in the January transfer window. They were, at that time, looking for Mikael Lustig’s replacement as the latter is running out of contract at the end of this season and hasn’t signed an extension yet.

Fonseca, who was close to joining Juventus last summer for £2m, was scouted by the Hoops during the course of this season before they wanted to make a move in the winter.

However, the Scottish champions failed to push that deal through and instead got Jeremy Toljan from Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of this season.

Amidst all that, here’s why Neil Lennon’s men should go back and re-ignite their interest in Fonseca when the transfer window reopens:

The right-back dilemma needs to be sorted

Lustig’s performance level has dropped off in the past 10-12 months, as teams began targeting him on the right-hand side of the Celtic defence. Hence, it makes sense for the Hoops to offload him.

The club’s other option at right-back is Jeremy Toljan, who is on a loan deal from Dortmund. While he is an exciting talent, the 24-year-old hasn’t been all that secured at the back. He is good going forward but gets caught when asked to defend in the wide areas.

Therefore, ahead of the start of next season, Celtic must make sure that they have a proper asset ready to play at right-back on a regular basis. That being said, Fonseca would be an ideal player for them.

When the club made a move for the Portugal U23 international in January, he was supposedly moving to Zorya Luhansk. But, as per the report in Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the right-back’s move to the Ukrainian club has fallen off and he is on course to leave Porto in the summer.

This is where the Scottish champions have to be proactive and make a move for the 22-year-old. He is a proper talent who could take that right-back spot and make it his own by the crunch part of next season.

Conclusion

Everything points towards the fact that Celtic need to solve their right-back issue in the summer. And getting Fernando Fonseca to instigate that wouldn’t be a bad choice.
