Why Celtic Must Sign Hull City’s Abel Hernandez

Scottish champions Celtic are considering the possibility of signing Hull City striker Abel Hernandez at the end of the season, as per reports from Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan international is out of contract with the Tigers at the end of the season and could leave the club. Celtic are set to make a move for the player and are willing to offer him a three-year contract, as per the aforementioned report

Celtic are set to win the Scottish Premiership once again and they stand a chance of completing a consecutive domestic treble. However, their European campaign was a letdown once again and manager Brendan Rodgers should bolster his squad to fare better on the continental stages.

Moreover, if the Hoops lose star striker Moussa Dembele, whose future is a subject of discussion, they would need a replacement.

With still no developments over the possibility of Odsonne Edouard’s transfer from Paris Saint-Germain becoming a permanent one, the Scottish champions could be thinly stretched in the attacking department, making the signing of a new striker of paramount importance.

Hernandez moved to Hull City in 2014 from Italian side Palermo but hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations since joining the club. In the two seasons that Hull were in the Premier League after he joined, the 27-year-old managed to score just 8 goals in 49 appearances in the English top-flight.

He has, however, been more prolific in the EFL Championship, having bagged a total of 27 goals along with 4 assists in 47 games. The former Palermo forward has spent most of the ongoing campaign out on the sidelines due to an injury but he still has impressive numbers of 7 goals and 2 assists from 8 Championship outings.

Hernandez may not have been a success in the Premier League but has proven himself in the English second division and has shone on the international stages as well, having netted 11 goals in 29 games for Uruguay, showing that he definitely has the quality to be a success in the Scottish Premiership.

At 27 years of age, Hernandez is entering his best years and has a good amount of experience behind him. Someone who will be in his prime for the next few years, Hernandez coming in for a free would be a great bargain and it is a deal that Rodgers and Celtic should definitely try to get over the line in the summer.
