Why Cardiff have pulled off a stunning transfer by completing this £3.5m deal for 27-year-old

Cardiff City have completed the signing of Greg Cunnigham from Preston North End. The newly-promoted Premier League club paid a fee of £3.5m to secure the left-back’s services and have managed to tie him down to a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old could prove to be an excellent signing for Cardiff. His experience and skills will go a long way in strengthening the club’s forces at the back. Furthermore, his pacy performances will help support the Bluebirds’ attack as well.

The player had a year left on his contract with Preston but now, Cunnigham will receive plenty of opportunities to prove his mettle in the English top-flight.

It will be tough for Cardiff to stand strong against the big boys in the league but having an experienced and skilled performer such as Cunnigham in the mix will surely help them. The player appeared 21 times for Preston last season as he chipped in with a solitary goal and provided 2 assists.

As far as his defensive work is concerned, Cunningham averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game. The player also won an average of 2.8 aerial duels, thus making him a solid performer.

He can also play on the left side of the midfield, adding a nice touch of versatility. He excels at holding onto the ball and as is the case with most experienced players, Cunningham’s concentration almost never wavers during the match.

His tackling skills are top-notch as well and he is known to get down and dirty quite often. While that kind of physicality will come in handy in the Premier League, Cunningham must tone down his aggression to a certain extent to avoid disciplinary issues.

If he can manage to do that, it goes without saying that the player will prove to be a key defender for Cardiff in the seasons to come. Staying afloat in the top-flight will be a priority for Warnock and his men, meaning they will require all hands on deck.

Furthermore, Cunningham’s work ethic is absolutely commendable. It remains to be seen if Warnock chooses to employ a 3-4-3 formation next season and if he does, Cunningham could prove to be an excellent wing-back on the left side.

Given his ability to surge forward, he would supply some delicious crosses to aid the frontline while also being on the lookout for a goal or two himself. Thus, it goes without saying that this deal will work wonders for Cardiff City and Warnock.
