Cardiff City would fare better if they drop interest in this 22-year-old attacker who is also being chased by rivals

Why Cardiff City should look at better players than Randell Williams

According to Wales Online, Cardiff City have been credited with an interest in Exeter City winger Randell Williams, with the report suggesting that Bluebirds’ manager Neil Warnock is keen to add more depth to his attacking ranks.

Cardiff, though, are not the only Championship side to have registered an interest in the 22-year-old attacker, with Wales Online claiming that the likes of Huddersfield Town, QPR and Nottingham Forest are also keeping tabs on the League Two star.

Randell Williams is very much an unknown entity in the higher echelons of English football but the London-born winger has really set the stage on fire in the fourth-tier with a string of impressive displays this term.

The 22-year-old is yet to grab his first league goal of the campaign but he already has three assists to his name in 11 appearances across all competitions.

Exeter City are still unbeaten at the top of the table with 6 wins and four draws in their first ten league games and Williams is among those to have caught the eye for the Grecians.

A youth product of Spurs, Williams had unsuccessful stints elsewhere in London at Crystal Palace and Watford, spending time on loan at Wycombe Wanderers from the latter before joining Exeter City on a free transfer back in January 2019.

The winger failed to find the net in 10 appearances in the second half of the previous campaign and while he is yet to open his account this term as well, Williams has seemingly done enough to put himself on the radar of several clubs higher up the footballing pyramid, with Cardiff City, QPR, Huddersfield all keen to play a gamble on him.

Interestingly, Neil Warnock has an impressive track record when it comes to unearthing little-known gems from the lower leagues.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was plucked out from League Two outfit Rochdale a couple of seasons ago and the arrival of players like Gavin Whyte, Joe Day and Curtis Nelson this summer further epitomized the fact that Warnock is not afraid to play low-cost gambles on players plying their trade in the third and fourth tiers of English football.

To put things into perspective, Warnock is a manager who has always preferred to build a team around homegrown talents and Cardiff’s interest in Randell Williams doesn’t really come as a big surprise.

To that end, though, one cannot help but wonder whether the Bluebirds should look to firm up their interest in a player who is yet to bag his first goal in the ongoing campaign.

Williams’ failure to make the grade at Spurs, Palace and Watford is quite understandable, given the Premier League status of those clubs, but he doesn’t have enough end product beside his name to convince the potential suitors in the Championship that he is, indeed, capable of making such a huge jump at this stage of his career.

The 22-year-old’s loan spell at Wycombe in League One during the first half of the previous campaign yielded only 3 goals in 23 appearances, figures which do not look convincing whatsoever, and his failure to find the net even once at Exeter City since his move in January highlights his lack of goalscoring prowess.

Going by the numbers, it is hard to see how Randell Williams would be an upgrade on any of Cardiff’s wide options in the Championship, with the Bluebirds already boasting of players like Mendez-Laing, Josh Murphy, Junio Hoilett and Gavin Whyte.

Suffice to say, Cardiff City need to show more ambition and, perhaps, look at some better players in the market during the mid-season trading period in January to enhance their chances of securing a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
