Cardiff City making a January move for this solid Ligue 1 star would solve a key problem for Neil Warnock

Wy Cardiff City should go for Younousse Sankhare in January

In July, the BBC had claimed that Cardiff City were one of the clubs interested in signing Bordeaux midfielder Younousse Sankhare in the summer. However, a deal didn’t materialise and the midfielder has since stayed put at Bordeaux.

Younousse Sankhare, 29, who began his career at Paris St-Germain, is currently out of favour under Bordeaux manager Paulo Sousa. The Senegalese wanted to leave the Ligue 1 club in the summer but he couldn’t.

As far as Cardiff City are concerned, they are back in the Championship after a brief stay in the Premier League. Despite many tipping the Bluebirds to achieve promotion at the first time of asking, they have yet to set the Championship alight, with the Welsh side registering just eight points from the first six games of the season.

There are a couple of weaknesses that Neil Warnock needs to quickly sort out if his team are to qualify for the play-offs. Cardiff’s defending has been shocking so far, with none of the players delivering consistent performances.

In addition to their defence, Warnock’s midfield has lacked energy and authority. He recently lost summer signing Marlon Pack to a hamstring injury, leaving the Bluebirds light in the midfield.

Of course, Warnock has the option of taking a dip in the free-agent market to sign a midfielder to cope with Pack’s injury. Even if he signs a free agent, the veteran Yorkshireman should reignite his interest in Younousse Sankhare and sign him when the transfer window reopens in a few months’ time.

Sankhare, who can play as a midfielder or as a left-back, is a tough-tackling player who would offer the ideal protection to Cardiff’s defence, which has looked shaky and disorganised at times this season. He is good with the ball at his feet and can cover a lot of ground due to his energy.

At 29, the Senegal international is no spring chicken and would give license to the Cardiff attackers to cause serious damage to their opponents. Truly, the ex-PSG man could make a lot of difference to this Bluebirds side.

Verdict

Sankhare certainly will be an affordable target for Cardiff. So without any second thoughts, the Welsh side must make a move for the Bordeaux midfielder in January to solve one of their biggest problems.
