According to claims from L’Equipe, as relayed by the Sheffield Star, Cardiff City have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Senegalese midfielder Younousse Sankhare, who is now a free agent after terminating his contract with Bordeaux.
Back in July, during the summer transfer window, a report from Wales Online had broken the news of Cardiff City’s interest in the 30-year-old versatile midfielder, who was also linked with moves to Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Swansea City.
However, nothing came to fruition and Sankhare stayed put at Bordeaux during the summer.
That didn’t really work in his favour though, with the former Paris Saint-Germain star completely frozen out of the first-team fold at Bordeaux.
It remains to be seen whether Cardiff City will opt to go back in the market for his services, now that he is set to be available for free in January.
Meanwhile, there is a change of air at the Cardiff City Stadium after Neil Harris took over the reins from Neil Warnock, who left by mutual consent.
With a new manager in place, it will be interesting to see how they fare during the mid-season trading period.
To put things into perspective, Cardiff City should pounce on the opportunity to snap up Younousse Sankhare at the earliest when the transfer window reopens in January, given that the arrival of a highly-versatile and experienced player like him would provide Harris with some much-needed cover.
Sankhare, who boasts of over 250 Ligue 1 appearances for PSG, Dijon, Guingamp, Lille, Valenciennes and Bordeaux, as well as a wealth of Europa League experience under his belt, ould be a huge asset to any promotion-chasing side in the EFL Championship.
Ideally, Cardiff City have enough competition for places in the middle of the park, with Joe Ralls, Marlon Pack, Leandro Bacuna, Callum Paterson and Will Vaulks all vying for two central midfield roles.
While Pack has established himself as one of the mainstays, following his move from Bristol City in the summer, Vaulks has suffered a dramatic fall in grace and has found his involvement severely restricted.
However, Sankhare certainly has the CV to come through the door as an upgrade on the club’s existing midfield options. His versatility to operate as a left-sided wide player and also as a left-back would go a long way towards improving the manager’s overall squad dynamics.
That said, Cardiff City must complete a free transfer for Younousse Sankhare in January.
