Brentford

6 goals, 9 games – Brentford might just strike gold by reviving interest in this pacy 25-year-old hitman

Why Brentford should revisit their interest in Mohamed Eisa in January

Back in May last summer, a report from the Gloucestershire Live claimed that Brentford were interested in signing centre-forward Mohamed Eisa from League Two outfit Cheltenham Town. However, the Bees eventually lost out to Bristol City in the race to sign the striker.

The 25-year-old was one of the hottest properties in the Football League during that time after bagging an eye-watering 25 goals for Cheltenham Town in the 2017-18 campaign but his move to Ashton Gate didn’t quite go according to the script, with Robins boss Lee Johnson not showing enough faith in the Sudanese’s abilities.

Mohamed Eisa made only 5 substitute appearances for Bristol City in the Championship last season before being sold to Peterborough United in League One earlier this summer.

And a move to the third-tier has helped him rediscover his goalscoring mojo, with the 25-year-old currently one of the top scorers in League One with 6 goals in 9 games.

Eisa has made a wonderful start to life at London Road under Posh manager Darren Ferguson, producing a couple of man-of-the-match displays in the 4-0 victory over MK Dons and the 2-2 draw away at Tranmere Rovers.

He deserves a hell of a lot of credit for successfully resurrecting his career that looked to be in tatters after an ill-fated spell at Ashton Gate.

The Sudan-born striker has taken League One by storm and a second stint in the second-tier might not be beyond the realms of possibility if he continues his prolific form in front of goal.

To put things into perspective, Brentford should consider going back in the market for the 25-year-old’s services in January after an indifferent start to their Championship campaign.

Having won 2 and lost 4 of their first 8 league fixtures, the Bees currently sit 17th in the standings and manager Thomas Frank certainly has a lot of thinking to do in order to get his season back on track.

Well, it doesn’t require a rocket scientist to figure out that the departure of last season’s top-scorer Neal Maupay to Brighton in the summer has come back to haunt the Bees.

Brentford have managed only 5 goals in 8 games, which is clearly not what the fans would have expected from a team that has carved out a reputation for producing some exciting football in recent years.

Ollie Watkins, who has been used out of his preferred wide position as a false nine in a 3-4-3 system, has scored 4 goals thus far but the lack of an out-and-out centre-forward has cost the team dear.

Without a powerful and dominating presence up front, there seems to be a kind of disparity between the forward line and the four players operating in the midfield.

Agreed, Said Benrahma and Sergi Canos have done pretty well in wide attacking roles but the Bees currently do not have a clinical finisher up top with a good all-round game to hold the ball up, bring others into play and, at the same time, deliver the goals.

To that end, Mohamed Eisa would make a fine addition to the club’s attacking ranks and with youngster Marcus Forss out on loan at AFC Wimbledon, the Sudanese striker could provide Thomas Frank with that much-needed focal point in the attacking third.

The 25-year-old has proven his credentials in League One and League Two and he certainly deserves another crack of the whip to hit similar heights in the Championship. It would be harsh to judge him based on his ill-fated spell at Bristol last season, given that he never started a game for the Robins.

To sum it up, Eisa doesn’t have the same technical ability as someone like Maupay but he could still help the Bees achieve a better scoring record in the Championship. That said, they should definitely look the 25-year-old as a potential target in January.
