Why Brentford have struck gold with a new deal for Sergi Canos

According to BBC, Brentford have secured the long-term future of star winger Sergi Canos with a brand new contract, with the 22-year-old putting pen to paper on a four-year deal at Griffin Park.

Canos was the subject of interest from Russian club FC Krasnodar during the summer transfer window but the Bees have moved quickly to tie him down to fresh terms after rejecting approaches for the talented winger.  (h/t West London Sport)

The new four-year contract should keep the Spaniard at the West London club until the summer of 2023 and, as per the report, Brentford have also included an option in the agreement which would enable them to extend his stay by a further twelve months beyond that period.

Born in Nules, Spain, Sergi Canos spent three years in the youth ranks of Barcelona before migrating to England to join Liverpool back in 2013.

Having impressed for the Reds at various age-group levels, the Spaniard only managed a solitary first-team appearance at Anfield and joined Brentford from Norwich City in January 2017, having previously spent the 2015-16 season on loan at Griffin Park from Liverpool.

Canos, who contributed with 7 goals and 7 assists from a wide attacking role in the Championship last season, has enjoyed a promising start to the ongoing campaign under the stewardship of Thomas Frank, with the manager hailing the player’s impact over the first couple of months.  (h/t BBC)

Despite Brentford’s rather hit and miss start to their Championship campaign this term, the 22-year-old has impressed with his flair and creativity as a part of a forward line featuring top-scorer Ollie Watkins and the influential Said Benrahma.

While Watkins has stolen much of the limelight with his flurry of goals after establishing himself in a centre-forward role following the departure of Neal Maupay to Brighton in the summer, Canos hasn’t really set the stage on fire with just 3 assists in 11 league outings but the Spaniard has been one of the backbones of the club’s attack, nevertheless.

Canos’ decent burst of pace, natural finesse, as well as his innate ability to find spaces in tight areas, have been key to whatever success Brentford have had in unlocking stubborn defences and the fans would probably share the same view.

To put things into perspective, it doesn’t really require a rocket scientist to figure out that Brentford have, indeed, struck gold with a new deal for Sergi Canos, as the decision to extend the Spaniard’s stay at the club makes perfect sense for a number of reasons.

The new four-year contract is likely to help Brentford ward off interest in one of their most highly-rated players while it also puts the Bees in a strong negotiating position should any potential suitor come knocking on the door for the winger’s services.

Canos is still not the finished article at 22 and given that he is only going to get better with time, the Bees can now look forward to enjoying the fruits of his prime years, which definitely lie ahead of him.

Brentford have pocketed massive profits from the sales of players like Maupay, Andre Gray, Chris Mepham and Ezri Konsa in recent times and a new contract has ensured that Canos won’t be sold for cheap either, although the Bees should try to hold on to their prized asset for as long as possible in a bid to push for promotion to the top-flight.

All in all, Brentford can now look forward to reaping the rewards of a move that looks like an absolute masterstroke.
