Bournemouth signing this 6ft 2in star would solve a key issue for Eddie Howe in the summer – opinion

Bournemouth opinion: Should Bournemouth sign Andrey Lunev?

Bournemouth currently have the second worst defence in the league. The Cherries have conceded 54 goals this campaign so far.

Eddie Howe changed his man between the sticks as Artur Boruc replaced Asmir Begovic for the game against West Ham in January. The decision caused a heated exchange of words between Begovic and his manager and the Bosnian has failed to start a game since (h/t Sky Sports).

Artur Boruc turned 39 last month and Asmir Begovic’s strained relationship with Howe means the Cherries have to dive into the transfer market in search of a goalkeeper and Zenit St. Petersburg’s Andrey Lunev would be a brilliant option.

After playing for over 5 years in the lower leagues of Russia, Lunev joined FC Ufa in 2015. After an impressive campaign, he was signed by Zenit in December 2017.

The 6ft 2in goalkeeper is Zenit’s first-choice between the sticks and has been doing well so far this season. The Russian has kept 8 clean sheets in 17 games so far this season.

Lunev’s positioning in goal is exceptional and he is almost unbeatable from distance. In the box, he is a commanding figure and isn’t scared to put his body on the line if need be. The 27-year-old also has quick feet and is exceptionally fast off the line.

Similar to Manchester United’s David de Gea, Lunev is renowned for saves with his feet and like the Spaniard, he is an unbelievable shot-stopper from close range. Lunev has saved 4 penalties so far in his Zenit career.

Although most of his games have come in the lower leagues, Lunev has made over 100 appearances in his senior career so far and irrespective of the quality of it, it is good experience.

Lunev also has 7 caps for the Russian national team and is expected to be the first-choice for his country after the retirement of Igor Akinfeev.

Conclusion

Had Bournemouth not conceded the shocking amount of goals that they have this season, they would have easily been in the top half of the Premier League. Eddie Howe seriously needs to address the problems in goal and Andrey Lunev is an option that he should consider seriously.

The Russian’s presence in goal will prove to be a gift for the Cherries and his leadership in the box will surely tighten up Eddie Howe’s defence next season.
