The Blues were one of the many clubs keen to offer the 23-year-old a fresh opportunity to relaunch his career, following an ill-fated stint at the San Siro. Several other clubs in the Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga were named among his admirers back in the summer (h/t Birmingham Live).
Puscas put a dramatic full-stop to the transfer saga with a move to Reading in the EFL Championship, where he penned a five-year deal until the summer of 2024.
The highly-rated Romanian centre-forward has since gone on to resurrect his career with a bright start to life at the Madejski Stadium, scoring 6 goals in 17 league outings for the Royals, who are currently placed 18th in the Championship standings.
The 14-cap Romanian international recently bagged an impressive hat-trick to propel Reading to a 3-1 victory away at Wigan Athletic last week.
However, as per the report, Puscas is already being linked with a move away from Reading, despite only completing a move to the Championship back in the summer window.
As per claims from Turkish website Ajansspor (h/t Birmingham Live), Turkish giants Fenerbahce have expressed an interest in securing his services ahead of the mid-season trading period.
With that in mind, George Puscas’ future at Reading continues to be up in the air. And Birmingham City should make a renewed attempt to sign him when the transfer window reopens in January.
The Blues were providing ample threat to the playoff contenders, following a promising start to the campaign under caretaker head-coach Pep Clotet, who took over the reins from Garry Monk earlier in the summer.
However, a winless run of five games in the Championship, including unimpressive 1-1 draws in each of their last three fixtures against Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall, has resulted in a slip to 15th in the standings.
Considering their recent lacklustre results, they will surely need to improve significantly if they are to finish inside the top-six in the division.
To that end, bringing in some attacking reinforcements to improve on a dismal goalscoring record of 19 goals in 19 games should be a top priority for Clotet in January.
Lukas Jutkiewicz is currently the top-scorer for the Blues with five goals to his name. However, with Alvaro Gimenez only finding the net twice so far and Kerim Mrabti yet to score, bolstering the forward line with a natural finisher like George Puscas would be the right course of action.
Birmingham City, of course, recently roped in free-agent Jeremie Bela to add a bit more depth and dynamism to their attack but Puscas seems more like the real deal.
The 23-year-old still has a lot of room for improvement in his game but he has already shown what he is capable of doing during his stint at Reading.
Furthermore, the Blues can also afford to look at him as an excellent long-term prospect at 23.
The Romanian certainly has the physicality of an old-school centre-forward and the Blues could well find themselves climbing up the table rapidly if he manages to rack up the goals in the second half of the season.
All in all, Birmingham City going back in the market for George Puscas makes perfect sense for a number of reasons.
