Why Rafa Benitez Signing A Contract Extension Can Become A Turning Point In Newcastle’s History

Newcastle United crossed the 40-point mark in the league with a dramatic win against Arsenal last weekend. The victory also means that the club are now safe from the dreaded relegation zone and Rafa Benitez deserves full credit for the way he has turned things around for the club.

The Magpies started the season on the right note and even managed to break into the top-six. However, as time wore on, the club’s performances took a major dip. Yet, they find themselves back in the reckoning for a top-ten spot with about a handful of games to go.

Now, with their Premier League status intact, Newcastle must make it a point to reach the next level and for that to happen, they must ensure Benitez signs the dotted line for a contract extension. The manager has remained coy about his future (as per The Mirror) but the club and the manager need to continue on this path together.

Suffice to say, Benitez is spearheading an exciting transition period at Newcastle. The way they have jumped back to calling the shots show how determined they are to truly establish themselves this season.

Benitez is building a new-age Newcastle United and it is imperative that he stays back and sees it through. They need him as the manager and it is safe to say that the former Liverpool manager might not get a better chance to lead a team to greatness.

The Spaniard has been a constant figure of stability for the club through the most turbulent times this season. The amount of challenges he has faced is immense.

Benitez rose above all the challenges and has now turned them into a team that can secure a top-ten finish. To put things further into perspective, it must be noted that this is only the third time that Newcastle are set to finish in the top-ten since 2007.

Upon Mike Ashley’s takeover, the club seem to have become comfortable with the tag of underachievers but Benitez is changing all that and Newcastle must hold on to him at all costs.

More than anything else, the manager seems to have built a strong team filled with players who listen. It is a relatively young team and Benitez has managed to extract the best out of most of them. Players like Jamaal Lascelles, Mikel Merino and Kenedy have been in exceptional form throughout the season and Benitez has played a key role in helping them reach their true potential.

Furthermore, Newcastle supporters are known to be extremely passionate and emotional about the club. At a time when the club were close to the relegation zone, there was a lot of turmoil among the fans but Benitez remained calm through it all and that’s what makes him ideal to handle the Magpies beyond the end of this season.
