Sheffield United

Sheffield signing this veteran 36-year-old star would get them a perfect Henderson replacement

Why Ben Foster would be a brilliant signing for Sheffield United

According to Sun, Sheffield United are eyeing a transfer swoop for goalkeeper Ben Foster if Watford are relegated at the end of the season.

Foster has been the first choice for Watford in goal this season and has done quite well despite the Hornets languishing at the bottom of the table.

In 14 games so far, he has managed 3 clean sheets and has conceded 28 goals, which is a bad sign for the team. Watford have sacked Quique Sanchez Flores just 85 days after he took charge of the club. They have found it difficult to move above the relegation zone this season.

And the report confirms that Foster may get a chance to secure his Premier League spot as Sheffield United are said to be a fan of him. The Blades are looking for a replacement for Dean Henderson, who is on loan from Manchester United.

They have been heavily dependent on the loanee for the majority of the season and Henderson has been excellent since moving to Bramall Lane. In 13 games he has played so far, the 22-year-old has conceded just 13 goals.

The report also claims that the Blades fear making his move permanent as the cost of buying Henderson and the wages he would want might be out of their reach. Therefore, Ben Foster is seen as a ready-made alternative.

The 36-year-old might be miles away from his prime but he still looks to be at the peak of his game despite Watford’s poor season.

Ben Foster

Foster has a wealth of experience in the Premier League after playing for the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Manchester United and Watford in his career. He has made 340 appearances in England’s top-flight and this would convince the Blades to sign him.

According to the Premier League stats, Foster has made 46 saves in 14 appearances this season. This accounts for 3.29 saves per game, which is a decent job by a player who is at the end of his career. With an average of 62.16% successful saves, the Englishman has been impressive so far.

Foster can give Sheffield United the balance they need to guard their post next season. While Michael Verppis hasn’t featured so far, Simon Moore has played just one game in the league. With a clear indication of a lack of experience in the goalkeeping department, Foster’s inclusion would pay off well for the Blades.

Verdict

With no permanent deal for Deal Henderson still, Foster must be lured to Bramall Lane next season for Sheffield United to ensure that they can continue playing well and stay at the top half of the table as long as they can.

In Foster, Sheffield United would have an experienced campaigner who can also lead them from the back. Therefore, they must continue pursuing him and must make sure they get their hands on the veteran.
