Chelsea would have incredible competition for this key position by signing this 22-year-old English star

Why Ben Chilwell joining Chelsea would hand them two of the best left-backs

Brendan Rodgers has done a brilliant job at Leicester and the Foxes are actual challengers for a top-four finish too.

The Foxes have several quality players on their books, and one of them is being linked with a big move.

Ben Chilwell has impressed much after coming back into the first-team, and Chelsea are leading the race for the 22-year-old, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Metro).

The Blues are doing pretty well under Frank Lampard too, however, landing Chilwell would provide the English manager a selection headache.

A tough decision on the cards for Lampard

Chilwell is one of the brightest talents in the Premier League and will improve in the coming seasons under the right manager.

Rodgers has done well with youngsters during his spells at Celtic and Liverpool, while Lampard was thrown into the deep end at Chelsea this season.

The former Chelsea star has done a decent job with the players at hand, and it is surprising that they want to sign Chilwell.

Emerson Palmieri

The Blues have a quality left-back in Emerson Palmieri, and at 25, he still has several quality years left in him.

The Italy international has found a new lease on life under Lampard but is currently out with an injury.

Landing Chilwell won’t be cheap as Leicester made a killing by selling Harry Maguire to Manchester United.

However, the Englishman would provide a lot of quality competition to Palmieri, and the pair could push each other to greater heights.

Chilwell’s signing would also be a statement of intent from the Blues as they haven’t been able to spend in the summer.

Lampard has to strengthen the side in the coming windows, and it will be interesting to see what route he takes.

The former Derby manager didn’t have the chance to sign top-level talent in the Championship, however, at Chelsea the story is different.

The Blues have always tried to land big names, but Lampard has done a great job with several young talents at the club.

Verdict

Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson is possibly the best left-back in the Premier League, but Emerson and Chilwell come a close second.

Chelsea having both the players on their books would provide Lampard with a tough choice to make, but it is extremely rare for a team to have two quality players for one position.

Manchester City have that problem for some areas, and it will be interesting to see if Chelsea have that issue for their left-backs.
