Why Arsenal’s Squad Is Strongest In UK

OK, if you were to suddenly parachute into England as a football manager and you could choose any of the current squads in the Premier League, which one would it be and why? But there’s one big proviso, you can’t buy or sell any players for the next three seasons.

In the opinion of this writer, the clear winners would be Arsenal followed by Manchester City, with Chelsea and Man United in equal third place. This begs the question as to why Arsenal are currently under performing in comparison with their three main rivals. But if this assumption is right, it also suggests Arsenal will be the surprise package to come good over the next couple of Premier League seasons. They could perhaps mount the strongest challenge of the remaining 13 games of this season.

This, in turn, presents opportunities for the far-sighted punters amongst us. As things stand, The Gunners are around 2/5 with major bookmakers including 32Red, Bet 365 and others to make the top four this year.

If you like the look of this value, then with some bookies who also run casinos, you may be able to get a decent-sized free bet for nothing. So, with 32red.com/mobile, for example new players receive £32 for each £10 of their own cash deposited. If you then play through on games like roulette where the odds get pretty close to even money, there’s every chance of retaining a good stake to change over to the sports-book side of the business.

Whether or not you think Arsenal are a good home for that money is an entirely different thing, of course. But when you look at the strength and creativity and the sheer depth of the squad, it’s quite mind-boggling that they’ve underachieved so much.

However, if you zoom right out and look at things strategically, it’s relatively easy to see why that is. The answer lies in the Emirates Stadium. This was a huge investment for the club and they’re only just beginning to emerge from the financial burden it imposed. Arsene Wenger was, therefore, under pressure to balance the books and he’s actually done a great job in achieving that despite the well-documented lack of a major trophy for a decade before last year’s FA Cup.

That burden has now been eased somewhat and it’s much-documented again that Wenger needs to bolster the defence. But the way Arsenal won with such consummate ease and relatively little possession in their 2-0 win away at Manchester City really spoke volumes about how far they’ve come. And, really, when you look at the squad of names such as Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud, Per Mertesacker, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, and Laurent Koscielny, to name just a few, is there a stronger or more creative line-up in England?

All this points to a steadying of the Arsenal ship and a resulting steady improvement over the next few years with a league position to match. Wenger has been unfairly criticised in the past. But what he’s achieved on limited funds since the stadium change and, of course, what he achieved before the restrictions were placed on him, really speak volumes.
